So my new rig should be here tomorrow and in preparation for setting it up as soon as it gets here Id like to decommission the old one. Anyone have any advice as to how to best do it? Ive already transferred all of the files that I care about to an external drive.

If you mean to wipe it of sensitive info so you can donate it, then CCleaner or DBAN will work. CCleaner is a snap to use but DBAN probably wipes it cleaner if you're more worried about somebody trying to recover info with the right tools.

If you want to dispose of it, then put a bullet through it ,cook it in your hibachi , or punch it with a hammer and nail.

Hope this helps.

The other drive on my 'retiring' rig is only partially functional and is definitely coming with me to the range next time I go out The drive with the OS Id like to keep free of bullet holes so that I can donate a functional PC to my sister . Will DBAN clean files while keeping the OS intact or will I have to reinstall the OS afterwards?

DBAN will wipe the OS. I'm not familiar with using CCleaner to wipe a HD, I actually didn't know it had that feature.

Learn something new every day. Hahaha
