Transfering data from 7 to 8.1

Your question gave me a kickstart to get into this because Win8.1 cannot use a transfer cable without 3rd party software and it seems windows will not support data transfer in the future.


It seems good answers are hard to find but I found 2 ways and 2 3rd party software that seem like good options.

2: To transfer file and settings using the “Windows Easy Transfer” feature on Windows 8.1, you first need to create an “Easy Transfer file”(.MIG file) from your old Windows 7 computer and then save it in a USB external drive or a DVD.

Now, you may use the Windows Easy Transfer” feature on Windows 8.1 computer to transfer all the files and settings from this .MIG file (which you have saved in the USB external drive or DVD) to your new Windows 8.1 computer.

Why can't you copy to a memory stick or DVD and then copy to your new computer. You could do as little or as much as you want. I did one transfer with a program I bought with a cable. I picked and chose everything I wanted and the program ignored my choices and copied everything. I still have old junk I didn't want to transfer.
