Topic: Starcraft 2 at 30 FPS? Posted: 28 Oct 2014 at 5:33pm |
Hi guys, I'm finally getting a little bit of time to play with my new Krypton I got a few weeks ago. Right now, I'm on my cell phone, in a hurry, and don't have my exact build or order number but I didn't really think it to matter for this question.
I installed Starcraft 2... it runs fine.... but at 30 FPS. I upgraded the video card to be one better than whatever came with the basic Krypton... it was a 6GB something. Also 16GB RAM.... but those are the only 2 specs I remember. My Desktop run SC2 at 100FPS-ish and it has a NVidia 560Ti. Is there something I am missing? I did all the updates through Windows when I first ran the laptop. Thanks. |

Try turning off Vertical Sync either in game if it's there or in the Nvidia Control Panel. Vsync will lock your frames at 30, 60fps, etc depending on its performance.

Vertical Sync was already off in the game. The Nvidia control panel was set to let VSync be controlled by the game. Still 30fps. It has to be locked some other way. Even when I toggled Vsync on and off.... moved graphics quality from medium to high.... It never left 30 FPS.... didn't even change by a single FPS.
Other ideas? |

That is strange. The only thing I've seen to lock FPS was VSynch, and you've tried that already...
Let us know when you find out, please. |

Another check is to see if the game is using the integrated video or your discrete gtx card. Go into Nvidia Control Panel, 3D settings, Manage, and set the game , or Global, to the video card. It might be called High Performance Nvidia or something close.
Good luck and let us know. Is it just this game? |

Ok, made sure it was set to NVIDIA high performance..... still 30 FPS, VSnyc was still off. I guess I'll start googling the issue when I have time and try some stuff that way. The game is still playable just bothers me that I know it should be running at like 3 times that FPS. The only other 2 games I've installed are XCOM and Fallout:New Vegas, neither of which lets me check the FPS. But when I installed Fallout, it automatically set it to the highest graphics settings, when I installed SC2, it set some to low and some to medium. Anyway, I'll let you guys know if I figure it out. Thanks for help though! :-). Edited by Redstyx - 29 Oct 2014 at 7:39am |

Use FRAPS to check your fps.
If the other games aren't locked at 30fps, it could be that game, Starcraft , has that limit? The games forums might help. |

FIXED!
Thanks Bpratt! I changed it to the high performance NVIDIA option like you said, hit "apply", made sure Vsync was off.... but didn't work initially. I guess the computer needed a restart for changes to take effect, although it never told me. I shut everything off, came back later.... suddenly 90-100FPS. Thanks again! |

And...... I just realized it switched back to 30FPS again. I downloaded FRAPS..... Also 30FPS on Fallout: New Vegas. I went to NVidia control panel and everything was still configured as it was when my FPS were briefly where they should be around 90. In SC2, Vertical Sync was still off. BUT, I did manage to raise it up to about 50FPS on both games, here's how: Instead of going to the Nvidia Control Panel, I went to the Nvidia GeForce Experience, made sure drivers were updated, and found the "Battery Boost" tab. The Battery boost was enabled, which was keeping the FPS limited to 30. I disabled the option completely and restarted the system. The games worked fine at 30, but that's beside the point. I would still like to get the FPS higher as it temporarily was on SC2, but Im happy for now. |

Oh I agree. Playable @ 30 fps... but why bother having a top of the line GPU (or damn near) if you're going to throttle it.
That's like buying a Viper and putting the governor on it to stop you at 40 mph. |

There was a time not that long ago when running only on AC was needed for optimal gaming with Optimus.
Try unplugging the AC, remove the battery, and plug back in. I'm sure you've messes with Performance settings in Windows? After that, you got me. |

*immediately launches GeForce Experience and checks Battery Boost on his own Krypton* It was turned on for me, but really didn't affect my gaming as I usually game while on AC. I left it on for battery play, but cranked the setting up to Higher Performance (60FPS). Were you getting 30FPS with the Krypton plugged in? If so, that shouldn't be happening even with Battery Boost turned on. |

Oh god, I use to hate the idea of Optimus. It just robbed the idea of a "gaming laptop".

Can you elaborate? I've always liked Optimus as it really did allow me to do non-gaming tasks for a much longer period of time while on battery than on previous hardware where the discrete graphics were always on. |
