Topic: New computer config. Help Posted: 04 Aug 2014 at 1:32pm |
Budget:
12.000 Expectations: Best of the best Usage: Gaming - large Movie server - 3d application Special Needs: Hello, I already own a Digital Storm machine, and I very happy with it, but right now I need something else from my computer, I want to use it like a big movie server, with program like Plex. I tried with external server, with out luck (transcoding issues) so I decide to move on to a beast machine to full fill all this needs. Because I need a large amount of hard disk o tried a config like this one, but please let me know if I am I. The right path. Hi Blueeagle327. That looks like a spectacular build. Pretty much the best right now. Don't know the display so can't comment on the Titans but for the very high Plex transcoding needs from the cpu you might consider waiting a month or two for the Haswell E launch. The x79 is getting a bit long in the tooth and the newer x99 will address some of its weakness, like many more USB 3 and SATA 6 ports. X79 still gets it done but newer is real close.
The new 5960x will have a soldered IHS, integrated heat spreader, if rumors are correct, which allows higher oc with less heat. Also, the new mobo will be DDR4, a good 50% wider memory bandwidth. Not exactly sure how memory plays with Plex but I would think very important. Your build is real nice. Go for it if you need it now or wait for Haswell E with the new Wellsburg chipset. Can't go wrong either way. Good luck. |

You selected 4 graphics cards but only liquid cooling for 2. Since the Aventum has a window, the Stage 2 Noise Reduction, wouldn't be particularly useful.
I would go with NAS grade drives. WD just came out with 6GB Red drives (for small 1-8 drive NAS systems). I do not know what Seagate offers for NAS drives. You didn't select a RAID mode for the data drives. If you are unfamiliar with RAID here is an overview: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAID. Also, you may want to consider hotswap trays for a file server, though they are not required. I think one system for both tasks isn't the right choice. I would suggest a file server system or appliance and a gaming + transcoding machine. A home file server doesn't need a real hefty CPU. One reason for this is it would be better to keep the file server out of the area of the home theater, since hard drives are mechanical and create noise. So keep that in a separate room. Alternatively go with a case with solid side panels. The Slade (Corsair 550D) has noise reducing foam in its side, top and front panels; so that maybe a good choice for you. Thanks for your quick answer, I will began to search about this new chipset.
My doubt also are in order of the amount of disk I can use with a configuration like this one. because of that I tried with LSI Mega RAID Internal 9280-16i4e (Up to 16 Drives) (SATA/SAS) (6Gb/s) (PCI-E 2.0) (512MB Memory) I would like to get the largest quantity my motherboard and power supply resist. About my monitor I planning to get something like 30 inch (already have one, a dell) but with 4k at the door I would like something to use this tech. Thanks again |

Hi again, I updated my system with your comments and made some modification, here is the new one
My machine will be not at my dedicated home theater, but in another room, and I change my configuration to raid 50 in order to have some protection. What do you think ? Looks good but as mentioned by Danjw1, the noise suppression package would not be needed since the Aventum has a window.

RAID 50 requires a minimum of 6 (2x 3 drive RAID5 arrays) drives with 2 going to parity. I would go with a RAID5 and hot spare, you loose only one drive to parity and one as the hot spare. The LSI card supports a hot spare, so if a drive fails it can be switched in quickly. The Aventum II support up to 8 drives.

I wouldn't say "needed" as the window will likely conduct sound, my point is that is isn't useful. Stage 1 would still be useful, for tuning of the fans. The "Hailstorm" or Corsair 900D can have a solid side panel to replace the windowed panel (sold separately). If you switched to this case and had them swap the side panel, Stage 2 noise suppression would be reasonable. It offers a bottom power supply and radiator chamber like the Aventum II. It will take up to 15 3.5" drives, with the addition of additional bays. It could also support a 3 5.25" bay hotswap rack for 5 hard drives. Here is a link to a review of this case: http://www.anandtech.com/show/6900/corsair-obsidian-900d-case-review-think-big-thats-only-half-as-large Edited by danjw1 - 05 Aug 2014 at 6:53am |
