I know this has nothing to do with DS but figure i would share this with y'all.
http://www.wired.com/2015/02/fcc-chairman-wheeler-net-neutrality/ http://www.nytimes.com/roomfordebate/2015/02/04/regulate-internet-providers/the-internet-is-back-to-solid-regulatory-ground I do wonder though if its considered as a utility like gas, water and electric is whether we will have to pay for what we use or it stays the same like its always been which is monthly. What do y'all think? |

It will be more akin to cellular voice plans, than to basic utilities.
It still will lack unbundling requirements, so monopolies could still really be there due to the cost of laying infrastructure. What may make bigger changes is if the FCC somehow gets its way and usurps any states legislation that prevents municipal broadband services. This would allow communities to fund the infrastructure to create their own ISP and create a service that competes with any commercial companies. The recent redefinition of broadband to 25 Mbps down/3 Mbps up helps make this case as they can then show a larger percentage of the country needs access to broadband and the ability for municipalities to create their own service could help achieve this. |

The biggest thing I took away from those (and related) articles is that the US has comparatively some of the slowest broadband speeds in the world. Other "as developed" countries are utilizing up to 1Gbps while we consider 25Mbps as "normal".
I would like someone to explain to me how a free and open marketplace with driven competition is a bad thing and why they think regulating it (like my cable bill?!?!!) will be good for consumers. |

I think you need some more dollars signs, we can't associate ourselves with 6 dollar sign simpletons. |

My understanding of this issue is more on ISPs charging more for domains etc that have high traffic and/or bandwidth usage. For the consumer the only charges would be pass-through charges for bandwidth used for gaming, streaming etc. The websites we use for gaming could be hit hard due to the pure numbers of players on line at any one time and that cost would most likely be passed on to us with higher subscription rates or costs to play. Other high use sites like youtube, hulu, and other streaming sites would be hit also.
As consumers we already pay for higher bandwidth. Time Warner (whom I am stuck with) advertises internet for only 14.99 per month. What the small print says is that will get you 2Mbs which is barely enough for e-mail. My 50Mbs connection is more like 65.00 per month! We could see a rise if we use on-line time more than what they consider 'normal' which would be me as I can be on line 16 hours or more at a time. I think my record is 42.5 hours in game constantly. |

I don't think anything would change in regards to how we pay to use the internet.
My ISP only charges for the speeds and doesn't charge me for how much bandwidth is used unlike Comcast and a few other ISPS that have monthly caps and charge you for going over. Whether that changes later down the line who knows. I don't think we have anything to really worry about....for now that is. Edited by ArkansasWoman777 - 05 Feb 2015 at 11:28am |

I've got to do more looking into this. Every time I think I have an argument put together, or a point to get across, it just looks silly and nonsensical to me upon review. /sigh/
(yes, original VERY wordy post was replaced with above paragraph. Nothing to see here, folks, move along please... ignore the nice man in the white jacket with wrap around sleeves.) |

Whoa! What game did you play for 42.5 hours straight? I always thought that a single Age of Kings match I once had that lasted 16 hours was crazy, but that's got nothing on 42.5 hours. |

I remember when cable came out. Yes Im OLD. And they said no commercials. And they said it would be cheap. And they said we could have "cuss" words without censorship. LIES ALL LIES Last week for kicks when watching Project Runway I timed the commercials. 40 minutes of show and 20 minutes of commercials!!!! Why do I pay so much for cable when the commercials are paying for the programming and we still can't hear the cuss words?????? Screw the FCC! (And kids that's what happens when adults have a glass of wine and are listening to Black Sabbaths first album) |

Not sure yet how this will fall out. I'm cautiously hopeful that this may put the brakes on where the ISPs wanted to push things. Might be a way to break the ISP monopolies, but not sure. I'm usually leery of extra regulation.

I'm more concerned about whether we still will pay monthly instead of what we use since its going to be reclassified as a utility |

Instead of making a new post i decided to reply to this one, what does everyone think of the vote to that is going to happen in a couple of weeks to repeal net neutrality? My current ISP, Windstream which is the other provider for my town and Suddenlink all support a free open internet and have said they won't change their business practices.
