I am looking to buy in the next few months but I love putting together on the configuator. I originally was going to get something from CP but after seeing the complaints on their website and the BBB I decided I would probably go with Digital Storm. I am dying to have a bult computer since all I have ever done is buy the pre-packaged ones. The last one I bought was a gateway and I have been happy with it. But a lot of the pre-loaded software really can bog it down. Anyway, I have a $3,000 budget to work with and this is basically what I came up with and had some change left over. I have a few questions as well.

1. I have heard that Windows XP will not recognize more than 4GB Ram. Am I wasting money getting more than 3GB??
2. Depending on the answer to queston #1, would it be better to stick with the 3GB of ram and go with a second NVIDIA 295?? which would I get the better performance out of?
3. Is it really that important to get your processor overclocked?? or other hardware for that matter?
4. Finally, what is an IEEE Card?

I guess I should give a little more backround on what I plan on using it for and my monitor...

I use a Gateway 21inch HD-ready 1680X1050 resolution.

I play mostly older games like GalacitcCiv2, Simcity4, and games like that. My wife loves the Sims 2 and would like to be able to play the Sims 3 when it is released. I am not into the 1st person shooters or online games like WOWC. Reading some of the other posts I can see that XP can not handle 6GB Ram. So would the extra video card make a huge difference? I can see quite a few Vista fans on this site but I am not ready to move to the new OS yet. Especially since most games I see are still set up to be compatible with vista. I do appriciate your help and if you can come up with a better configuration, I would love to see it. Thumbs%20Down

1. no you are wasting your money by going with xp.

2. even with a 295 and 3GB of ram, xp is wasting your money and not able to use your total ram.

3. cpu speed is everything, ocing the cpu is raising its speed, its a difference of 2.66GHz or 3.6GHz, world of difference.

4. FireWire card.

now what games are not compatible with vista? and what is your ticket number?

both sims 2 and 3 will run just fine on vista and wow is vista ready also.

The system Perlife posted is pretty much what I have minus the LC. I have stage 2 V8 cooling and with the HAF case my system runs extremely cool. I am OC'd to 3.3ghz and the OC is backed by DS warranty as long as they perform it. Your choice of course but personally I would drop the LC and go with the V8. Obviously with the LC you could get a higher OC also if you are going with 2 Video cards LC might be a good idea. If it were me I would still stick with the V8 because the 295 has its own cooling fan that works extremely well. Ermm  If you dropped the LC you are looking at 2690.00 with the build Perlife posted.

I also saved quite a bit by going with the Stage 2 air using the V8 and picked OCing of my 920 and was lucky enough to get 3.59.  The OC of a 920 can save $1000 against the price of a stock 965 at 3.2.  You definitely do not want to go with the stock fan especially if you want to OC.  I don't see any reason anybody would not want to OC for just $45 since DS warranties their OC with the system for 3 years.

I think you will enjoy your new beast when you get it.  Take some time to read the reviews here and the configuration suggestions.  It won't be long before you narrow in on a system that has the best bang for the buck and also fits your budget!

So I guess my next question is. Does the size of the hard drive effect system performance? Is it better to have a smaller drive with a back-up external drive or will a larger hard drive make the system run better? And would it be better to get a firewire or does this system come with one?

By the way Perlife, I love the way the build is at $2995 awesome...

Yes, performance does decrease as you fill up your hard drive. The reason for this is that hard drives have the highest transfer rates on the outer area of the platter. As you move progressively toward the inner area, the transfer rate decreases. Star

External Fire Wire would be my choice for Hard Drive. The HAF Case comes with a front and back Fire Wire port.

what you are suppose to do is get the vertex II when it comes out and use that as HDD1 and push the 500GB to HDD2 as storage.

you are very welcome... i just notice something...
i chose
6GB DDR3 1600MHz Mushkin
change it to
6GB DDR3 1333MHz Mushkin

and you are set... by the way, as for now just stay with the 500GB then when the Vertex II (SSD) comes out buy it and use it as HHD1 (for your OS)...

I learned all this from DST4ME; he is my mentor

My next question is:

1. Does Digital Storm include all of the installation CD's that come with the Hardware as well as send the CD's for the OS?

And thanks for the build DST4ME, I appriciate the time you used making it. With the $220 left over I can add Office and a card reader. When does Vertex II come out? Is it going to be expensive?

I also wanted to say that I became Norton Free yesterday and what a difference not having all of my resources being eaten up. I know there are a lot of AV's out there. I went with a recommendation from a friend: Comodo.

I can't tell you all enough, how much I have learned reading the posts on these forums. Thansk so much for your computer insight.

It might be several months before I am finally able to get it. I need to make sure that all of my other commitments are handled first or the wife will kill me. I promised her a new kitchen this year...LOL

But when I do, I will for sure take Photo's and post them.

Not really, you just have to check the liquid level once a month or so and add/replace the liquid if it gets too low.

Try the above link or google it. I am sure there are many places that sell the stuff. As for how to replace I myself never had a cooling system but it shouldn't be too difficult. Several people here have LC systems they should be able to give you better advice and links to fluid etc. etc. Ermm

vertex II should be out withing a month or two, the price we are not sure about.

LC system maintenance is very easy, its take 2 seconds to look at the reservoir and see if it need topping off or not.

DS uses fluidxp you can get it from DS or fluidxp themselves

fluid needs to be flushed every 3 to 5 years, which DS can walk you thru if you need it, its easy.

I just went back to the build DST4ME did and noticed that if I click on the items that were already listed and noticed the same item available for less $$. Is this right? I re-priced my system and it dropped by $200+ and that does not include the discount of $100. So my system actually dropped from $2700 to $2402 if I am reading it right.

Even without the same discount, the cost is less than it was with the discount on the original buld. I have got my wife almost bought in on the idea, so hopefully I will be able to order something soon.

Another Question. I have been reading many of the new config. posts on this site as I continue to decide on what exactly I am going to settle with and have noticed that one some systems it is suggested to get duel cards 285 or 275 instead of the single 295 (Which is the one on my build.). The answer is usally the same performance versus price. In my situation where I am using a 1680 X 1050 resolution and am not going to run any first person shooters or Multiplayer online games anytime soon. I prefer games like Sim City, Galactic Civ, Civilization, and the Sims 2 & the Sims 3. So is the 295 the best card for me?

Well if the games don't' utilize sli then 2 x 275 is best cause for those games you Will be able to run off of one card, the 295 is in sli internally, so you would have to disable the internal sli and basically be working with a 260+.

another thing to keep in mind is that if your games don't use sli, then you might just want to go with a single 275 period as you will never have a use for the second GPU since you won't be doing anything that uses sli.

so in short if all you are going to be doing is things that don't utilize sli then all you need is one GPU period and the 295 won't work well for you since its in internal sli and you will have to use only one of its cores.

I would assume since the games were out befroe SLI became available, then they probably would not need it, but would they be compatible with the card even if they are not using both GPU's? Are a lot of the new games coming out going to require it? If so, then maybe I do need it. Sorry if I am confused. I am not familar with all the tech stuff since I have always purchased pre-built computers and have always assumed bigger is better. But as in other posts I have read, that is not neccessarily the case. Thanks so much for your time and patience DST4ME. As the time gets closer expect more questions... Thanks again.
