This is why alienware sucks. They will rip you off. Like they mark up products at least double what they are worth. Compare them to ds part for part and you will be able to see. But keep in mind hard drive prices are 3x what they normally are at the moment due to a hard drive shortage so that's why many things might cost more on ds

Alienware builds decent systems. I have one. The difference is you tend to pay more for the product and their customer service is no longer competitive. I say things now about DS that I used to say about Alienware's service when it was a smaller private company. Man they used to be the best!

LOL. I did exactly the same thing. I actually called multiple times. Response is the main reason I switched to DS.
Edit - Actually there were other reasons but that was what I based my final decision on. Edited by CamperX - 05 Nov 2011 at 8:08pm |

Its true because think about it, Alien was the bomb for a while, but as soon as you debate the "all knowing and all powerful" Your wrong instantly. Where as, People like us research, debate, study what they look for, then make the decisions themselves. Hence how i found Digitalstorm. |

LOL. True. Alienware WAS untouchable without question. In fact, at about the same time, Dell had won every customer service award on the planet. So my thinking was that things would just get better with Dell / Alienware. I was sorely mistaken. Everything seemed to become outsourced and sloppy.

Alienware was crap and has always been crap, if you have an Alienware then you have the same problem as dell, instead proper retail parts you have bs parts that maid by them. I have owned AW pcs, they were never great, biggest problem with them is that for their price you can get much more powerful upto date pc from builder like DS and fnw, tho fnw is not great anymore either.
Having said all of that, DS does not make their own laptop either. Edited by DST4ME - 05 Nov 2011 at 8:22pm |

Hence the formation of -------...But IMHO, DS is better than ------ in that they allow better customizability and free overclocking, as well as their awesome customer support.
[EDIT - Thank you for your kind words but we can't be hosting competitor names on our forums, sorry]

@DST4ME
Alienware was crap and has always been crap
IMO you are wrong.
Alienware was not always crap and honestly their systems today are not crap. My sister currently owns the Alienware m17x10 [From Current Dell]. Of course she just play's MMORPG's but she does nothing but raves about her laptop to me and her headphones. I also purchased an Alienware before dell bought and its in my sons room still kicking ass. Alienware does some amazing things inside thier boxes better than digital storm [LED Lighting System, Wireless Fan Side Door]. Just their choices they offer on builds suck. As to customer service never called alienware and havent had to call digital storm yet either.
All this being said I LOVE MY DIGITAL STORM PC and believe me when I say.
I will be buying my next PC from Digital Storm As Well.
Frag Hard Or Go Home
just my opinion from ownership of both

The xm17 only has a GeForce GT 555m. The Alienware m17x can have up to a GeForce GTX 580m.
Both laptops are different. If you want to compare a Digital Storm laptop, you should either go with the x15 or x17, they both can have up to a GTX 580m. |

Hello everyone
I have been looking for a laptop for quite awhile now; this laptop is going to be for work and gaming. So doing my research I found DS and just recently found ----So this is what I came out with from both websites, with the same specifications and upgrades. DS laptop X17E Chassis Model: Digital Storm x17E Laptop (Model: 7280) Display: 17.3 Inch (16:9) (Resolution: 1920 x 1080) (Glossy Surface) LED-Backlit Display Processor: Intel Core i7 960 (3.2 GHz Turbo Mode to 3.46Ghz) (Quad Core) (8MB Cache) Thermal Compound: Premium IC Diamond CPU and GPU Thermal Compound (Reduces Thermal & Laptop Noise) Memory: 6GB DDR3 1333MHz (Requires Intel Extreme Edition Processor) Primary Hard Drive: 500GB 7200RPM (SATA 3Gb/s) Secondary Hard Drive: - No Thanks Optical Drive: Blu-Ray Player (Blu-Ray 6x) & DVD/CD Writer Wireless Card: Intel Ultimate-N 6300 Wireless LAN Module Video Card(s): 1x NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M 1.5GB Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (64-Bit Edition) Warranty Plan: Life-time Expert Customer Care with 3 Year Limited Warranty 401825 Digital Storm Laptop 316217 1 $2,176.00 $2,176.00 401826 PROMOTION: 10% Discount of $242 Applied to Digital Storm Laptop 316217, Original Price $2,418 1 Sub-Total: $2,176.00 DS warranty Life-time Expert Customer Care with 3 Year Limited Warranty The "Life-time Expert Customer Care with 3 Year Limited Warranty" includes the following benefits: 1. Life-time access to our expert customer support team for all kinds of computer issues. 2. Three years of labor free warranty service including labor costs for part replacements, tune ups, and diagnostics. 3. One year of defective part replacement service. 4. Life-time access to labor free upgrades or the option for any customer to make upgrades to their Digital Storm system without voiding the warranty ----------------1 Year Part Replacement and Free Shipping Warranty with DVD image and Lifetime Support/Labor Phone/Online Support Lifetime Free Labor Lifetime Part Replacement One Year Free Shipping One Year Now I am not sure if DS includes free shipping in their warranty or not. --------- has a lifetime of free labor, and DS has only 3. I am not sure which one to go with, since I am in the need of a laptop soon. And if I can have any changes on this config to make it cheaper would be appreciated. Lets keep in mind that DS or ---------- do not build their own laptops, the laptops they sell are Clevo/sager models, specifically the 7200 series for their 17”. I have found this review of DS x17 laptop http://www.pcworld.com/article/243117/digital_storm_x17_review_laptop_delivers_excellent_performance_average_everything_else.html I have been looking at other brands such as MSI, ASUS and Acer, so any help will be very helpful. Please let me know what you think about this laptops and the clevo/sager laptops in general. Thank you Edited by Alex - 07 Nov 2011 at 2:14pm |

I have a 5 year old Alienware (prior Dell takeover). It has lasted a long time and was very solid, the only problem being one hard drive in a Raid 0 setup failing very soon after receiving the computer.
I'm currently at Stage 6 of my new Digital Storm PC, eagerly awaiting that.
The major reasons I changed is for a custom pc case, the value and performance from DS, the excellent reputation of DS, and that Dell now owns Alienware and it shows. As a customer of when Alienware was it's own company and then calling Alienware when their now a Dell owned company, there is definitely a night-and-day change.
I would definitely go Digital Storm.

undeniable, congrats on your Stage 6.
You couldn't have stated things better. Yes, my Alienware prior to Dell still runs solid. It's a great system for its time. The "night-and-day change" in customer service is why I'm here. |

Funny enough I tried to help someone with this exact same question on a different forum. I will post the same comparison here with out naming the other company. I will be comparing this DSO mid-range base model build to the other company's top-end base model. (One hint right there, DSO's mid-range is equal to their top end). Both systems have options that have been upgraded from their base models to make them both equal in terms of hardware. What's the same on both systems: Screen: 17.3" 1920x1080 res CPU: Intel Core i7 2670QM (2.2 GHz Turbo Mode to 3.1Ghz) (Quad Core) (6MB Cache) RAM: 8GB DDR3 1600MHz GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M 1.5GB HDD: 500GB 7200RPM (SATA 3Gb/s) DVD: DVD+CD Writer/Reader Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (64-Bit Edition) What's Different: DSO gives you a 3 year parts/labor warranty plus free life time tech support (based in California). The other company gives you 1 year parts/labor and 1 year tech support, and you have to pay extra if you want that 1 year of tech support to be based in North America. Funny how they do not even promise US tech support, only "North America" which can still mean foreign countries. Here is a technical breakdown of both builds and their prices: DSO: $1530.00 Chassis Model: Digital Storm x17 Laptop (Model: 8170) Display: 17.3 Inch (16:9) (Resolution: 1920 x 1080) (Glossy Surface) LED-Backlit Display Processor: Intel Core i7 2670QM (2.2 GHz Turbo Mode to 3.1Ghz) (Quad Core) (6MB Cache) Thermal Compound: Stock CPU and GPU Thermal Compound Memory: 8GB DDR3 1600MHz Primary Hard Drive: 500GB 7200RPM (SATA 3Gb/s) Secondary Hard Drive: - No Thanks Optical Drive: DVD/CD 8x Multi-Drive (Writes and Reads DVDs, CDs) Wireless Card: 802.11 B/G/N Wireless LAN Module Video Card(s): NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M 1.5GB Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (64-Bit Edition) Warranty Plan: Life-time Expert Customer Care with 3 Year Limited Warranty Other company: $2107.00 PROCESSOR : Intel® Core™ i7 2670QM 2.2GHz (3.1GHz w/Turbo Boost, 6MB Cache) OPERATING SYSTEM: Windows® 7 Home Premium, 64bit MEMORY: 8GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1600MHz (4DIMMS) VIDEO CARD: 1.5GB GDDR5 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M HARD DRIVE: 500GB 7200RPM SATA 3Gb/s LCD PANEL: 17.3-inch WideFHD 1920 x 1080 60Hz WLED WIRELESS CARD Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1000 INTERNAL OPTICAL DRIVE: Dual Layer DVD Burner (DVD+-RW, CD-RW) WARRANTY AND SERVICE 1 Year Basic Plan SECURITY SOFTWARE: No Anti-Virus Software Selected NORTH AMERICAN PHONE SUPPORT: 1 Year North American Phone Support by Your Tech Team SOLUTION STATION: Unlimited software phone support for 30 days SOUND OPTIONS: Internal High-Definition 5.1 Surround Sound Audio So you can get a laptop with the exact same hardware, screen size and resolution from DSO for over $600 cheaper then the other guys. I think that makes DSO a clear choice, especially when you add in longer (as in forever) and better tech support. |

Yes, the 3 year limited warranty is 3 years on labor, and 1 year for defective part replacement service directly with us. Usually almost all components have a 3 year warranty with the manufacture, so you should be able to replace it directly with them if the direct service is over.

I will add my $0.02 from a recent experience. Alienware is now Dell. I was asked to look at a Dell Inspiron laptop that belonged to a friend of my wife. It would only partially boot up Windows 7. The laptop was 13 months old and so was one month out of warranty. Because of that no one in technical support would speak with me without a charge of $59.00. I could talk to sales all I wanted about ordering a new hard drive but forget about asking a few simply questions from tech support before ordering a new hard drive. Although my DS system is not quite 3 years old, I can't imagine anyone at DS not being willing to speak to me and answer a few questions when my system is out of warranty.

I bought an alienware laptop once. biggest mistake of my life, not only does it come loaded with bullsh*t bloatware (almost half the HDD), but the over priced piece of sh*t fried on me in 11 months. the genius alienware support (dell) said it was my fault and wouldn't fix it without wanting 500+ bucks or give me a refund even though it was still under warranty. I even Spent hours on the phone with Mohammed from India trying to get some kind of help, he was impossible to understand and his only solutions were to empty the recycle bin and install windows updates. I hope that whole company burns to the ground.
anyways, go with DS. you won't be disappointed. and sorry for the language, I just hate them with a passion. Edited by jgarc12 - 11 Nov 2011 at 6:05pm |

Ive been a long time allienware/dell xps owner and made the switch to DS ,matter of fact my new system just came yesterday. Here is what i found between the two.
Dell/allienware both use generic parts now or non performance parts such has thier motherboards and memory. The customer support for both is really bad now , everytime you call you get a guy reading scripted pages who knows nothing about computers. The systems are way over priced for whats in them, the ode systems from DS are a way better deal and everything in them is performance parts . My new system blows away my old allienware thats only a couple of years old. I knew it would be better but the fps differance in the games i play is unreal some games running 100fps more than my allienware ran them and my allienware isint to far behind my new ode performance wise but the parts make the system. I will never buy another dell or allienware for my gaming system, they are ok for normal everyday computing but i will leave my gaming to the good folks at DS from now on.
