Hey everyone, was looking to build a decently specced computer for ~1000USD. I first checked out the more well-known competition (cyberpower/ibuypower) but have heard mixed reviews, in one of those reviews was mentioned your company and when I did more research, everything has been positive. without further adieu here is the form for this forum filled out.

Budget:
I am trying to get this to 1000USD without sacrificing too much performance.

Expectations:
Single monitor gaming and photo/video editing computer

Usage:
I don't play alot of FPS, but I want to play Starcraft II at high settings, WoW at its highest even in big raids, I plan to play Star Wars Old Republic/DC Universe/Diablo 3 when they are released and wish to play them at/near full rez. I am also a photographer, and wish for better performance with Photoshop CS4/Lightroom and my HDR programming.

Special Needs:
Nothing special, just mild overclocking, future upgradeability

youre getting much closer on the second one here, still waiting to hear back from DSO on taht MV board, cant reccomend it yet.
the sad thing is, with the current market, its really hard to buy under 1450ish without cheating yourself. outdated hardware doesnt drop in price as fast as it should, so every 50ish under that line that you go, youre getting older gear and still paying close to the same amount of money relatively

i usually try and reccommend you get as close to 1300-1400 as possible, even if it means saving for a while, a good computer can last you 3+ years, its an investment worth saving for if thats what it takes

all that being said, the 2nd build really isnt too bad, that mobo and lack of a cpu cooler concern me, and you could get to a 470 without too much more money... but the p55 mobo choices are hurting right now
see what i mean by just a little more money lol? let me get an answer on the MV board and we will try and get something together for you
is waiting/saving till about 1400ish an option for you? most of your desired uses there are on the higher end of performance

yea, i know what you mean about those 50$ here and there. i am always saying, well its only 60 more for this, then 50 more for that, etc. then when you add it up, you are right in the low 1400$ish range.

i may be able to swing the 1300-1400 range. it would mean using my old monitor for a month or so, but worth it in the long run when its 3 years from now and i am either happy i did this, or kicking myself for trying to save 200$. so if you can put something together for that, i would be interested to see it and how it differs from what i put together.

edit- feel free to scrap my ideas totally and just do whatever you would do if you had that money to spend if that is best.

for i5 its kinda pointless, the mv can't oc, the asus mobos here for i5 don't support sli or well basically are not good at all.

for i7 this is what I came up with:

Ticket Number: 467889

now the 460 will give you what you want at 1600 x 1200 but at 1900 x 1200 it might have problems with some games as far as getting 60 fps goes.

Stick with the 760 over the 655K. Four real cores are better than 2 real cores and 2 hyperthreaded cores.

After looking at the p55 mobos here only the ftw makes sense and at that price range he might as well get a x58 system.

I would highly recommend the ATI 6870 for the best price to performance ratio.

I would also recommend a dual core over a quad if you're looking to save money.  The difference between the dual i5-655k and the quad i7-750 in gaming is very minimal stock, and overclocked by only 600MHz over the quad, outperforms it.

ATI 6870 vs GTX 570, while the 570 does outperform it, the 6870 is also quite a bit cheaper.

of course at +600mhz higher clocks it outperforms a 760....
a q6600 overclocked beats a 875k stock, doesnt make it a more powerful chip.

My point is, you don't absolutely need a quad core for gaming.

A 760 at 3.9GHz will always match or beat out a 655K at 3.9GHz, four real cores beat 2 hyper-threaded cores, so I'm not sure what you're trying to go with this? The 760 is only +$26 more than the 655K, I'd call that the deal, not the 655K.

i don't really see where he was going with that either... comparing cpus with different clocks is like comparing apples to oranges. for that chart to have any relevance they would have to be the same.

many applications don't use hyper threading effectively and can sometimes have reduced performance, so having 4 real full cores is more powerful then have 2 cores with hyper threading to make 4 cores.

for $26 he is much better off with the four considering most games can only run at a max of 2.5 cores. some do 4 cores (some effectively and some not) but they are to become more numerous in the future. considering this is a investment why should he shoot him self in the foot for later?

just to let you know the performance with the 460 is all over the place... high max fps and really low min fps... i would go with a amd 6870 over the 460. also with out upgrades cpu cooling your not going to have a very high overclock, you could probably expect anywhere 3.3-3.6ghz range
2.5 Ghz Core duo
Nvidia 9500 gt
3 gb 1033 Mhz ram

if we can't answer a question shoot a e-mail here.

In multi-threaded applications sure, but again, for gaming, the difference is minimal.

Then look at stock clocks only, fps difference is minimal.

Agreed, though we are looking at primarily a gaming machine, not a workstation.

Not sure where you get that information, I'd like to see a source.  $26 is minimal in the price difference though that could be used towards a better power supply, or something else.

Agreed, I'd recommend the 6870 over the GTX 460.  On the stock CPU cooler you will most likely be limited to 3.3GHz.
