So the other day I realized that my current desktop is over 3 years old and sporting a 2.6gh 1st gen i7 with only 6 gigs of 1066mhz ram. Oddly enough, the SLI 285s are still halfway decent, but certainly not sufficient for the most recent games. I decided that it might be time to consider looking at a replacement...

I'm looking for a machine that can handle both games at ultra settings on 1920x1200 and CPU intensive computations, and this is what I've come up with so far. I'm still not sure what to do for graphics though. I've had mixed experiences with SLI, some games use it, many more seem not to, and more than a few run like ass if I don't disable it. I'm also not entirely sure if I want to overclock the CPU to Stage 2: 4.5ghz, or just leave it at 4.0ghz.

Budget:
2000-2500, the lower the better

Expectations:
Remain useful and relatively powerful for 3-4 years. Dual 24 inch displays at 1920x1200, single monitor gaming.

Usage:
Gaming and academic research (numerical and virtual simulation, data analysis, GPGPU programming)

Special Needs:
SSD OS/app drive, 1TB+ data drive, 16 gigs of ram, no silly windows or case lights, as quiet and cool as possible.

Hi that one guy.
The processor is just about right. You could go with a i5 if you are just going to do mostly gaming for gaming. It would be much cheaper, and prob more than adequate. However, the i7 is great if you plan on playing cpu intensive games (Total war shogun 2 is a cpu hog!). The i7 will last you a little bit longer, but you could also just upgrade down the line a litte bit earlier in order to get the cheaper i5.

When it comes to the graphics card, I did a lot of research and found that the gtx 670 is almost just as good as the gtx 680 (at the resolution you need. The gtx 680 is a bit better when it comes to higher resolutions!) but is also much cheaper (unless you plan on overclocking the gtx 680). Heres an example of difference between a gtx 680 and gtx 670 for a variety of games. http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/geforce-gtx-670-review,3200-15.html

Switching to the gtx 670 will save you lots of cash for little bit of performance. This way you can save money. However if you really insist the gtx 680 is a great card. Both cards should last 2 to 3 years and allow you to put games on high or ultra (depends on the game).

My system is a ode level 1. Right now I can run any game on ultra at very high framerates except shogun 2 when there is 2k plus soldiers on the field. Use that as an example for what you need :).

Everything else looks good. Good luck
