Thanks Alex.
Can I get a 4790K 4GHz? (Its not listed in the options) Are my other components (motherboard and ram type) compatible with this? Compatible if Overclocked? |

Hi ned forrest... To select the 4790k chip, start with Slade level 3. The x79 mobo in your build is for LGA 2011 cpu pin count, and the 4790k is LGA 1150. A Z97 mobo would be compatable.
Hope this helps. |

Just noticed your graphics card.... Go to the 4-core Slade pro workstation.

Bingo, go with the Z series chipset stuff. You can select the 4790K there.

Here is more or less the system you speced out: https://www.digitalstormonline.com/configurator.asp?id=1007431
You don't show an OS so I put Windows 8.1 Professional. I went with the Sabertooth motherboard over the Extreme since that is available with the newest chipset. I didn't add the lighting you listed since the Slade (Corsair 550D) doesn't have a window. I also bumped you to 32GB of DDR3-2133. Edited by danjw1 - 08 Jul 2014 at 1:34pm |

Thanks, this is all coming together.
Regarding the MOBO: the Sabretooth lists only up to 1866 MHz RAM which is below the fastest I could get (2133 0r 2400). When I go to the other Z97 boards that do accept my RAM choice, the Graphics are below the spec of my main monitor...but this doesn't matter since the monitor plugs into the Graphics Card instead of the MOBO...right? If it matters, When I go for both RAM and Display limits, the only board on the config that has both is the ASUS Z-97 Deluxe. Since I intend to go to stage 2 overclock (why not?),maybe someone will say I need the Deluxe MOBO anyway. |

Yep, the Sabertooth does have that limit, but others like Hero, Deluxe will not.
You won't be using the motherboard integrated graphics, the monitor plugging into the graphics card. Pick the motherboard that meets your needs. There are so many specs to consider across many boards, it's best for you to match whatever your particular needs are. Tough for us to recommend. |

Actually, RAM speed doesn't have a big effect on the overall speed of the system. The sweet spot for Haswell systems is either 2133 with a CAS latency of 9 or 2400 with a CAS latency of 10. But 1866 isn't going to be all that much slower, probably not noticeable in most situations. The memory can run at the lower speeds, it just may not work well above its rated speeds.
Motherboards are probably the biggest headache deciding on components for a custom build. There are lots of features, ports and form factors that you need to consider will be best for you. If CPU overclocking is the most important feature motherboard feature to you, then a ROG board is probably the best choice. It will have gaming features you don't need, but they tend to be the best overclockers. Keeping to lower speed memory can lead to a higher CPU overclock. That said, the better the memory is, the more stable it will be at any speed it can hit. All that said, in overclocking circles there is the phrase "silicon lottery". Some CPUs (even within a particular SKU) will be better than others. It really is the luck of the draw. As long as it will meet its minimum specs the manufacture has no reason to allow an RMA. Usually, you will get at least some headroom for overclocking, but it will vary from CPU to CPU. Asus offers a comparison table for their Z97 motherboards here: http://www.asus.com/us/site/motherboards/Z97/comparison/ You can click "Customize Table" button on the top left of the page to exclude/include different motherboards. That might help clear up what each motherboard has to offer. |

Welcome to the forums, ned forrest.
What is the name and version of the CAD software that you intend to use? Why? Some special purpose programs have very narrow hardware specifications so it is best to start with those and build your machine from there. |
