Topic: Any customization on laptops? Posted: 27 Mar 2014 at 4:19pm |
As I sit and check the site everyday, waiting for the 17" laptops to come back in stock, a question occasionally pops into my head. This is one of them.
Does DS do any kind of customization or fulfill special requests for laptops? Seeing the 2nd and 3rd pictures in this customer review from kernols, it would be great if DS could add some extra heat piping to the CPU and GPU right in the factory. After having an Alienware M17xR3 for a little over 3 years now, I've found that one of my main concerns is with overheating. I suspect part of the problem is shoddy thermal material used between heatsink and CPU/GPU. I used to do warranty work on Dell laptops, so I saw what was used for those. I'll be buying the high-end thermal compound when I place my order, but I'm just looking for even more cooling if possible. I'd be willing to pay extra for the work, so was just wondering if it's even an option. Thanks. Edited by Roykirk - 27 Mar 2014 at 4:20pm |

That's a great question. Don't think I've seen it asked before.
I would guess they don't do custom cooling, etc like on the desktops, but I would email or call and ask. Let us know. |

Haven't heard of them doing it yet but would be great to know if it's something they would do if requested...

I guess I'll wait to see if Alex responds. He's usually pretty good about that.

Custom cooling on a laptop that might run hot is a good idea. Lets see if DS will address that issue. There motto you dream and they will build it! DS does customization on desktops, dont know about laptops?

We haven't look into offering that yet, but I will share it with the team. It might be something we could do down the road, but not anytime soon.

Oh well. Won't be soon enough for me, I'll wager, since I'm hoping to pick up a new laptop around April 3.

Availability will be back April 3rd on our laptops.
The heat sink mod looks quite interesting, definitely possible for thermal improvement, but after speaking to some of our engineers about it, it's something that won't do anything to benefit real world temps or else laptop manufactures would have been doing this a long time ago. If there was a fan that was blowing air on them, that would help with temps, but even then, not by a huge margin. |
