So, I've been looking at a specific build for a few months now. It's a configured Apollo that looks ok on a technical standpoint:

Configuration Code: 1147604

My budget lies around $2000 to $3000 without shipping and tax.

What I want from this computer is the ability to do a wide arrange of things with minimal performance loss. I'd like it to be able to play a wide variety of games as well as be able to edit and render videos with a good balance between reliability and speed.

I'll be using it to play games such as Skyrim, Fallout:NV, Borderlands 2, PAYDAY 2 as well as recording, editing and rendering video and audio and hopes to do so with optimized graphics with minimal performance hits.

Any advice, alternative builds and suggestions are appreciated.

Hi Soulistice....   Welcome to the forums.      Looks like a good build to me.

Couple of things.....  If you'll be doing a lot of editing or multitasking I'd consider the i7-4790k for its hyper-threading , meaning double the threads.   Whether its worth the extra $130 is up to you and the budget.  The I5-4690k  will certainly get the job done.

I would change your Seagate drives to the Western Digital Blacks for another $19 each.    A more reliable drive with better warranty.

The noise package I would change to the stage 1, if any at all.   I don't see anywhere to add any sound deadening material that would matter.

The side blow-hole....  Not a bad idea since a side fan blowing directly onto the video card is a nice feature but for a single card, not sure its needed, but for $50 is does give you better cooling.   Not sure what I would do.

You didn't mention the monitor's resolution you'll be gaming on, but if its a single 1080p then the gtx 970 is a great pick.

Hope this helps and good luck. Big%20Smile

I'd step up to the level 3 and drop the raid 0 config. With 2 1Tb HDDs you have the storage but with raid 0 it makes a virtual drive of the three drives (SDD and 2 HDDs) and is not fault tolerant, meaning if one drive fails you lose everything.   I'd hate to lose 6 months or 5 years of work because the little SDD decided it's time to retire.

It would cost about $600 more but is still within your stated budget and you get so much more in the CPU and graphics that would be a lot better for what you will be doing.

Thanks for the advice, bprat. It is a single 1080 display setup.

The config is already level 3, although I do see what you mean with droppign the RAID 0 setup.

oops

I was going by the I5 cpu and didn't look for the level.

The I7 4790k and GTX 980 would be a consideration.

Bprat's suggestions are solid. ( as usual )

Hi Soulistice,

I assume that noise is a consideration since you chose the noise suppression package. If noise is a problem you should move to the Slade case. You can get the side mounted fan in the Slade. Check out the level 3 that comes with the better CPU/GPU and within your budget. Keep in mind that when you add a side fan or radiator to the Slade you increase the noise. The case comes standard with sound proofing. The Slade case is the Obsidian Series 550D case.

Thanks for the case suggestion. The noise reduction is simply preference, though. I don't mind listening to a bit of purring from the fans.

Looks good to me...the only changes I would make is to bump the SSD up to 256GB (utilizes all of the NAND channels on the controller, giving you higher performance as well as additional space for programs) and perhaps changing from the H100 to H100i (more than just Corsair Link was changed). If you do prefer a quieter computer, you can change the case to the 550D and go for the 120mm cooler instead.

Are you looking for the two 1Tb HDDs to be duplicates of each other so if one fails you still have everything on the other and they are fault tolerant?   The 2 Hdds would be a mirror image.

RAID 0

RAID 0 is not a true RAID as there is no redundancy with RAID 0. RAID 0 is typically referred to as a performance RAID as it takes all of your data and stripes it across two drives. The idea behind this RAID is that with two drives actively accessing all of your data it could theoretically be accessed twice as fast. Statistically this is not accurate, though performance is increased.
Advantages ◦Faster load times/speed increase
◦Uses the capacity of both disks

Disadvantages ◦No redundancy - one drive fails all data is lost

RAID 1

RAID 1 is most commonly referred to as a mirrored RAID. RAID 1 takes all of your data and duplicates it exactly between the two drives in a RAID. Should one drive fail within the RAID 1 setup the other drive will take over as the primary drive without any data loss. The failed drive can then be replaced and the RAID array rebuilt in order to re-establish the mirror between the two drives.
Advantages ◦Data Redundancy
◦One drive fails the other keeps going
Disadvantages ◦Requires 2 hard drives of equal capacity only

If this is what you want, you are set. If not I'd consider making a "virtual drive" by partitioning the HDD and creating the virtual drive and just drop the raid array.

The build looks good to me and will be good for what you said you want it for.

With a good RAID controller, it will do a striped read and mirrored write to get the same read performance gains as a RAID 0. I haven't looked to deeply into the RAID controller on the Z97 PCH so I'm not positive if it does this (I hope it does, the only reason I can think of why Intel wouldn't include this is if there was a significant increase in the number of ALUs to allow for this and resulted in a larger piece of silicon making it more costly).

I am indeed looking for the mirror drive setup, Pace. I'd hate to lose programs and big games which takes forever to download, as well as capture data. I already utilize 1TB of space and find it sufficient.

Thanks for the extra info on the 100i, . I didn't know the real differences between the pumps. However, the SSD is mostly to boost boot time for windows and core programs like web browsers and the steam client itself.

Forgot to mention, the 240mm CPu cooler is mostly to be more safe than sorry with a overclocked CPU which WILL go through some stress at some point in this computer's life.

Also, I know the Apollo is an Corsair case, but I forgot which. Would anyone care to remind me?
