Looks like a solid setup! You could go with SLI 980s as well but the Titan Z does have more VRAM.
Also, if you want to play at max/near max settings, you're going to need atleast 3x SLI GTX 980 or 2x Titan Z. Edited by Nav - 03 Dec 2014 at 9:35am |

Hi Mouseguard.... That is a powerful rig, but 4K is very demanding. Nav nailed it for higher graphics.
Sli 980 would be my pick over the Titan Z. The TitanZ dioes have 6 gb vram vs 4gb vram for the 980's but the 980's seem to bench a little better. Plus newer architecture for the developers. Plus, wattage is lower. . And, if you needed more ooomph, cheaper to add another 980 than another Titan Z. Titan Z is the winner for graphic developers, modeling forecasting, and other heavy computing apps that the Titan was really designed for. My only problem, personally, with a dual gpu card is that if it fails, and warranty doesn't cover it which can happen, you're out a lot more money over a single 980. Plus, the other 980 gives you another card to use if one fails. Have fun. |

Hi Mouseguard,
I see you switched from the X99 system to a Z97 system. The Z97 MB with the 4790k CPU is a great setup for two GPUs. It is not the best choice for more than two GPUs. If think you need a third or forth GPU in the future, you need to go back to the X99 system with a 5820 or 5830 CPU. The Z97 will be PCIe restricted for three GPUs. You could have a bottle neck with the available lanes communicating between the CPU and the GPU. I would take a hard look at how many monitors I will be using and at what resolution. This will tell you how many GPUs and what power supply you need for Max gaming. Your last system is a good build for two GUPs. Frank Edited by FrankW - 03 Dec 2014 at 1:00pm |

Just one monitor, will be a 4k, so I am sort of in limbo about what to get. I don't have enough room for more than one monitor, so will get the best I can. Just want to have enough horsepower to drive my gaming will all the bells and whistles I can get =)
Thanks for the input guys, more decisions =) |

i was watching a video the other day where a guy was testing just how much vram was being used while playing BF4 and other demanding games at 4k on a 2x GTX 980 setup and the usage never even got to 4GB. they were in fact closer to 3GB (it varied from 3.0 to 3.2 GB). sli scales a little differently than xfire. i've seen some tests that showed a pair of 290Xs scaled really well at 4k resolution on certain games. with that said, the new nvidia cards scale nicely as well.
my interpretation is that the Titan Z and other cards that load up on memory won't see huge gains over cards with enough memory and higher clocks. my advice would be to go with 2x GTX 980 (or even 970 if you don't mind turning down some game settings) at 4k gaming.
