Hello everyone. It seems like it's time for me to update my gfx cards, when I first bought my machine from digital storm I could run Crysis maxed out which was a huge benchmark game at the time... but now I feel like I can hardly run any of my games decently in SLI and I was hoping if anyone here could help me decide on my next purchase. As the title said I have 2x GTX 285's in SLI and it doesn't seem sufficient anymore for gaming. I'd like peoples recommendations on what cards are nice/best bang for buck, or if they feel my setup is still viable and there are things I could do differently to boost my performance. Thanks in advance.

PS: I bought my pc back in 2009.

I just upgraded to the Titan from a 295 in June but I think the 780 TI would be the way to go now. The Titan upgrade has been amazing! But with the 780 TI which is faster and cheaper it is the way to go!

Okay cool, thank you. I was looking at that anyways... didn't quite wanna shell out that much for a Titan. Also, anyone reading this have good performance with some of the cheaper lower end cards?

@Tidgxor 1920x1080

I am not looking to set benchmark records or anything, I just want a good card that will let me enjoy some eye candy without breaking my bank account.

If you are planning on staying at 1920x1080, I would consider the 770, especially since its prices have gone down with the release of the 780 Ti. At 1920x1080 the 770 will more than suit your gaming needs.

Yeah I am planning on staying at this resolution, I doubt I would higher. Do you by chance know how much resolution effects frame rates etc? I have a 1680x1050 monitor as well.

Well, there isn't a precise formula, but in a nutshell, the higher the resolution the more demanding the game will be on the GPU (And CPU for that matter). Other factors such as Anti-aliasing, texture details, and other such in-game features will also be a factor, but resolution is a big one. For instance, your 1680x1050 monitor would do just fine on the 760. To ensure the same high-level of performance, you'd probably want to go with the 770 for 1920x1080.

no no no no... and no.  Don't listen to Tidgxor.

Buy 4x EVGA GTX 780 Ti Classifieds.   Put them under water (since we're not going for world records no need for Liquid Nitrogen) and OC them by about 15%... nothing crazy.  Really the only way to go if you ask me.  ;)

But for the price range, you can't beat the 780 Ti.  It is a fully unlocked GK110.  Only thing the titan wins in is more memory (6GB vs 3GB) which can suck if you're playing on multiple 1600p monitors.  But yea, one 780 Ti will destroy your 200 series cards by it's self.  You can also pick up a nice EVGA GTX 780 SC (non-ti version) for ~$500 now a days.  It's barely more than a GTX 770 and will definitely perform much much better than a GTX 770.

But if you're on a budget and the $400 range is your limit, the GTX 770 will own most all at 1080p.  It's a great card.

Take this with a grain of salt: I built my system in 2010. An i5 2.6ghz oc'd to 3.4ghz, 4gb ram, 2 SSD's (1 os 1 games) and a Gtx270.

I just refreshed it. 8gb ram now and a gtx760.

It's pushing 3 Benq 24" 1080's (5760x1080 total) without issue. Tri-monitor gaming at ultra? Nope, but it's doing better than I expected (mid/high mix).

On a single monitor (1920x1080) its handling a high/ultra mix on BF4 no problem.

Figure out a budget and then see what you can get in that price range. The GTX 760 will be about 10% better while a 770 will be about 30% better. This is a comparison of BF3 on 1080p (64fps vs 73fps vs 91 fps). The 780 will get 111fps (75% better) while the 780ti will hit 131fps average (100% better).

SLI GTX 285 64fps
--------------------
GTX 760   73fps   ~$250 (+10%)
GTX 770   91fps   ~$350 (+30%)
GTX 780   111fps ~$500 (+75%)
GTX 780ti 131fps ~$700 (+100%)

There is over a 100$ difference between the two cards, we must have a different definition of "barely." Big%20Smile

Sounds like a winner! Although, I'm planning on having two 780's in SLI by my B-day. I can't wait!  They will look very nice with my new EVGA Pro-Bridge.Excited

Hey guys, finally managed to go out and buy my GTX 770! Great call on the card, its a beast. I wasn't cheap so I shelled out for the 4gb EVGA Classified Edition and it's great. However, pc still not running as well as I'd like it to, but, I purchased 12gb triple channel (3x4) RAM cards by corsair, hopefully It'll run like a champ soon. Just wanted to give you guys a bit of a update. Cheers!
