So i got my new pc and to be fair this is my first i7 ever but i was curious as i know this chip get's hot. is it normal for the thermal's to be around 50c when playing a simple game like mass effect 1 ?
i did run prime95 small FFT'S for about 15 mins and it stayed around 62c. just asking as my old skylake i5 barely reached 50c. P.S the cpu is watercooled |

It is well documented that the Chip is on the 'hot' side. You may experience sudden spikes: which according to Intel; is normal. I may run at 55-60 playing ghost recon with mini spikes up to 74.

Yeah that's what i figured lol i just thought the cpu would never reach over 50 with water cooling but this is the 7700k we are talking about. So it's bound to get hotter.
thank's everyone for the responses |

Temps depend on ambient temperature / Cpu cooler mainly there are other factors.
Also we normally use the word "hot" for Temps over 80c, lol so don't bad mourh that poor 7700k |

With Intel's track record of sh*tty thermal compounds and the amount of space/gap between the IHS and the actual DIE, I'm surprised Digital Storm hasn't jumped on the delidding train.
I take 100% credit for getting them hard line tubing. Give me a year or two, and I'm sure I'll convince Digital Storm to offer delidding of non-soldered CPU's with along side their EllerLux Cooling System. |

The DS rep clearly told me that it is NOT ok to eat my PC. I knew it was a lie. |

Voided warranty, maybe. As for the damage to the PCB/CPU Die... no. Definitely not. Unless you're an idiot who puts the CPU into a vice grip and even then, it's not probable. As for a few degree's? I've first hand seen a 20 degree drop under full load, and we went from a 4.8ghz overclock to a 5.1ghz overclock with lower temps and barely any increase in voltage. Now all mileage will vary, but people are seeing on a higher than average rate delidded 7700k's doing 5.1ghz and higher at 1.3-1.35volts. At that range, we're talking 5.2-5.4ghz at 1.4-1.5volts. Now DS does modest overclocks. So with a very simple overclock and replacement of TIM, plus a reduction in gap between the die and IHS, we will essentional see more than a few degree's, which much better overclocks at lower voltages. Seems like a win-win to me. But hell, if you want to buy a 7700k and no delid it, that's your choice. As for me, the pro's vastly outweigh the con's. Not even remotely close. |

this procedure is for extreme overclockers and benchmark warriors, not for your average gamer running a moderate 24/7 oc. those temps savings i've seen are from people running extreme benchmarks, so yeah, under those conditions i guess you'll save 20 degrees or more, but under a normal load, i seriously doubt it.
and don't you have to keep re-applying the liquid metal TIM much more often than you normally would? Edited by db188 - 22 Aug 2017 at 6:18pm |
