How to Convert Your Console Gaming Friends

PC gaming vs. console gaming is an eternal debate among gamers that seemingly has no end in sight. It’s difficult to persuade someone who is so locked into their ways when it comes to gaming on consoles, but as PC gamers, we know that we are playing our games on the best hardware available. Here are a few tips that just might help you to convince even the staunchest defender of console gaming to make the switch to a custom gaming computer or custom gaming laptop.

Graphics

This is a total no brainer. Take a look at any PC game running on top-of-the-line gaming desktops vs. consoles. The PC game always looks better. Graphics cards for PCs are simply better than the proprietary ones that are designed for consoles. For example, take a look at the videos and screenshots for the Playstation 4 and Xbox One. The graphics on a game like Battlefield 4 on those consoles are comparable to that of a PC on medium. MEDIUM! If you want games that look amazing, PC is the only way to go.

It’s fairly common knowledge that games released on consoles feature slightly “dumbed down” graphics compared to their PC counterparts. In this day and age, when graphics are so close to reality, why would you choose an option that is clearly inferior?

Upgradeability

This is another big one. PCs offer you the ability to upgrade individual parts over time, as opposed to buying a completely new system every generation. Can’t run your games at ultra anymore? Buy a new graphics card and maybe some RAM. With these incremental upgrades, your PC will be able to handle the latest games at the highest performance settings for years to come.

Can we say the same thing for consoles? Absolutely not. As we mentioned earlier, the newest consoles are comparable to PC on medium settings today. This is at the dawn of their release, mind you. PC parts will continue to improve over the next few years, while consoles will fall behind. Why? Because you cannot simply open up your new Playstation 4 or Xbox One and swap out the GPU or RAM when you need a quick upgrade. This is one of the biggest caveats of console gaming.

Cost

Wait a second…aren’t the new consoles cheaper than PCs!? Well, it may appear that way in the short term, but in the long run, PC gaming will save you money. While PCs require a bigger initial investment than new consoles, once you make that investment, you’re only looking at paying for upgrades (as mentioned above) over time, instead of a new system. Once a console has run its course, it’s time to drop another $500 or more for the new system. Don’t forget the extra $50-$60 for a spare controller. Oh, or the $50 a year for online gaming (Ha! They charge you for that?!).

And while yes, you can go out and pay $1,200 or more and build a monster rig, there are cheaper options for gaming rigs out there. Take for example the Digital Storm Vanquish. It’s fully customizable and starts at $699, making it just as expensive as a next gen console when you factor in the extras you need when purchasing a console. Oh, and for that price, it’ll give you better performance…Just sayin’.

PC games, on average, are also cheaper than their console counterparts. While many console games release at $59.99, PC games often release approximately $10-$20 cheaper. Those savings definitely add up over time. Oh, and we also have Steam, Green Man Gaming, GOG, Humble Bundles, Indie Gala, Indie Royale, etc. The prices during sales on those websites are mind blowing, and are totally unmatched in the console world. Relatively speaking, PC gamers save a ton when purchasing their games.

These are just a few of the ways you can convince your non-PC gaming friends to see the light, but many more exist. Robust gaming communities, better controls (mouse and keyboard for shooters anyone?), more gaming options (try playing an RTS on a console…seriously, try it.), etc., are even more examples of why PC gaming is better.

Can you think of any additional ways to convince your friends to ditch the consoles and hop on the PC bandwagon? Let us know in the comments below!
