Topic: x17: My review Posted: 17 Dec 2011 at 7:03pm |
Unboxing: On Monday Dec 12'th after a long day of work and a painful bus ride home i checked my laptops order status for the billionth time, seeing that it was still in stage one i let out a sigh hoping that it would at least get here by Christmas... not 5 minutes later there was a knock at my door, and i found a UPS guy guy standing outside with a large package... after signing for it, i brought it inside to, well... open it!

Imagine my surprise to find a brand new digital storm laptop! at first i thought it was a mistake, because online i was still in stage one.

I immediately plugged it in and turned it on. I had some trouble getting with the hard drives in a RAID array, i sent an email to alex and no more then 20 minutes later he sent me an email back with steps i took to fix it the problem. I ran a windows setup and when it asked for a product key my heart skipped a beat. i tore through the box and all its countenance looking for the key. i felt like such an idiot when i found it under the computer!
The Laptop:
(i got the lights at bust buy)

Chassis Model: Digital Storm x17 Laptop (Model: 8170) Display: 17.3 Inch (16:9) (Resolution: 1920 x 1080) (Glossy Surface) LED-Backlit Display Processor: Intel Core i7 2860QM (2.5 GHz Turbo Mode to 3.6Ghz) (Quad Core) (8MB Cache) Thermal Compound: Premium IC Diamond CPU and GPU Thermal Compound (Reduces Thermal & Laptop Noise) Memory: 16GB DDR3 1600MHz Primary Hard Drive: 500GB Hybrid 7200RPM with 4GB SSD (SATA 3Gb/s) Secondary Hard Drive: 500GB Hybrid 7200RPM with 4GB SSD (SATA 3Gb/s) Optical Drive: DVD/CD 8x Multi-Drive (Writes and Reads DVDs, CDs) Wireless Card: Intel Advanced-N 6230 Wireless LAN Module Video Card(s): AMD Radeon HD 6990M 2GB Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (64-Bit Edition) Warranty Plan: Life-time Expert Customer Care with 3 Year Limited WarrantyMy Review:I've had almost a week to play around with the laptop... and so far i love it! you can tell because it took me a week to finally tare myself away and wright this review. pros (things i like): The laptop just looks amazing, i get 250+ framerate in TF2, (i haven't bought any newer games because untill now i couldn't play them, i will update this when i do.), The laptop turns on in about 10 seconds, i can log on and start programs with the swipe of my finger. I haven't seen any of the temps get above 50f its very silent compared to other laptops i've owned. DS support is amazing It shipped before they even started building it It also came with a bag Battery lasts about 2 hours of gaming, or 6 when doing misc stuff.
cons (things that could be better): The touch pad has a 'grainy' texture but i don't really mind since i use a mouse, The power cord sticks out the back, i kinda wish it was on the side, or at an an angle,

i was playing saints row the third (not a bad game, i give it a 7.5 out of 10 but thats a story for another day) and after 2 hours of smooth gameplay i closed it and realised that i had forgotten to close TF2, and it was running in the background the whole time! there was no point in the game that i experienced any lag!
although i dont know the exact framerate... is there any way to find out other then running fraps in the background?

Ok, its been a wile because ive had a LONG list of games to play through, but ive got some FPS numbers to share...
In Saints row the third at MAXIMUM settings i get 74 FPS
In The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim at MAXIMUM settings with the skyrim 4k HD overhaul, HD water, HD faces, and better shadows mod i get 66 FPS
In Deus Ex: Human Revolution at MAXIMUM settings i get 60 FPS (because the game limits the frame-rate to 60 FPS)
In Metro 2033 at MAXIMUM settings i get 30 FPS (i haven't seen it go above 30, maybe they limit it to 30?)

while i cant recommend this laptop enough i should warn you, its rather heavy, i should find a scale and get an exact weight, but if you want a laptop better suited for being carried around you might try the x15?

hey :-) I had noticed this question of yours on another review, and I'd like to know how this worked out for you, because I'm interested in this as well. Were you able to order the system without any logo or sticker applied to the lid, and if so, did it arrive correctly? Thanks!

... and a question for alex, would it be possible
to get one without any logos or anything on the back of the screen like
it shows in the gallery?
