why does DS sell so few of intel SSDs and so many samsung ones? Which brand is better?

Intel makes good SSDS but so does Samsung so i guess its a matter of which one you want.

i dont know, i was just wondering if there was any big difference between intel and samsung. ive never bought an SSD before, so im looking for suggestions on SSDs, looking for one about 500 GB.

I can only speak from my experience but this is what i have seen. Here is the list of SSD drives i have tried
Intel         x25m 80GB
Intel         520   480GB
Samsung 530   120GB
Samsung 530   500GB
Samsung 530   1TB

Between them all i have had 0 problems. I did run into the issue with the new Samsung Drives and speed degradation that the firmware patch fixed on the 1TB drive, but after applying it the drive performed like it did the day i bought it. The Intel 480GB drive is in my work PC right now and is very stable. I have had good luck with both drives, but its like anything else in life it's the luck of the draw.
 The difference between the EVO and PRO is easy, the PRO supports encryption and the EVO does not. I think the PRO has a longer warranty and maybe a greater MTBF. That's pretty much it from what I can tell. I do know the PRO is more for businesses while the EVO is for enthusiasts.

I upgraded my 350 RAID drives to two Samsung 850 Pro 512's and execution is totally insane. Can't even sip my coffee during boot up anymore.

R/W is so fast and stable that you actually have to pay attention to what you're doing...

First, make sure the 840 Pro is 256 GB not 250 GB. The pro uses a different type of NAND. The Pro uses MLC which is older but faster. The regular 840 and the Evo use TLC which is newer and cheaper to produce. Also, the Pro's MLC NAND is supposed to last much longer. The 2nd article estimates that MLC's expected lifespan is 60 years vs 19 years for TLC. If you do not plan on using the SSD for more than a decade, this is trivial. Depending on how close the prices are, the Pro is the way to go. If the Evo 840 is significantly cheaper, it is not bad at all, I own a regular 250 GB 840 and it is very fast. If you can find a regular 830 get that, it also uses MLC. The difference between the Evo and regular is that the Evo only uses 2 "bits per cell" while the regular uses 3 bpc. This makes the Evo faster.

I just responded to another thread about SSD speeds. Here is my response from that post.

You won't do any better than the Samsung 850 Pro. It out performs other similar type of SSDs in almost all categories. You can read about performance comparisons at the link below. Or you can go to AnandTech and compare the 850 Pro to other SSDs in the Bench section. The SanDisk Extreme Pro is also good.

Intel has provided good SSDs with great reliability. But they have never been at the top of read/write speeds.

Don't buy a Samsung 840 EVO. They have a problem with long term memory degradation. Samsung has issued a software fix but last I heard there were still some issues. Stick with the Samsun 850 Pro if you are not budget limited.
