Thinking of swapping out the GTX 580's (SLI) for a GTX 980 on an aging but still strong Digital Storm rig. Any bottle necks? Will I receive full benefit from the 980?

*specs below*

Intel i7 Extreme 965 ( clocked @ 3.8 )
MB: Rampage 3 extreme
Ram: 12 gb
ASUS GTX 580's SLI

Thanks

I don't see any problem.  The 965 clocked to 3.8 should be fine.  Still a good chip.  I can't say no bottleneck at all with every situation, but certainly not enough to warrant a new setup.

Your mobo's Pciex16 slots are version 2.0, Pcie 2.0, and the new cards are 3.0 , but they are backward compatible with little or no performance loss, especially with a single card.   Bandwidth is fine.

You'll see better frames, a lot less wattage used and lower heat, and quieter.

Your biggest bottle neck at this point will either be your HDD's assuming you're not using SSD's and your cpu.  Though don't get caught up on "biggest".  Neither is extreme.  Just aged.  The instructions for an old first gen i7 are starting to get dated, but you should be good and see no issues at all.
