I've had my DS for over three years now and am quite happy with it. But it's time for some upgrades.
Stats: Case: Cooler Master HAF 932 CPU: Intel i7 950 (quad core) oc'd to 3.95 Ghz Mobo: EVGA X58 SLI 3 RAM: 6Gb DDR 3 1600Mhz (Digital Storm Certified Performance) PSU: 1000W Corsair Hard Drives: 1 x Intel 80Gb SSD 2 x Intel 120 Gb SSD 1 x Western Digital Caviar 1Tb GPU: I x NVidia GeForce GTX 570 (1.2 Gb vram) OS: WIN 7 - 64; Home Edition First I'm looking to upgrade the GPU; vacillitating between NVidia GTX 770 and GTX 780. I know prices have dropped, but is the extra $150 for a 780 over a 770 worth it on this rig? Second, I want to upgrade to as much ram as my pocketbook can handle; at least 12 Gb if not 24Gb. I know its DDR3 1600 that's in there now. What specifically should I be looking for as a replacement........maker....model....specs? |

Hi steamboateng...... The 780 is about a 20-30% boost over the 770, so it's up to you how important a jump that is. Your X58/ 950 is still a great rig and no bottleneck for most gaming. I'm assuming this is a gaming rig.
Compared to your 570, the 770 is a huge 50-75% jump and if you game on a single 1920x1080 then it'll play great. Here's a link comparing the two.... http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/831?vs=829 You can put in the 780 to see the increase over the 770 with this tool. Might help you decide. The 780 almost but not quite equals a sli, 570 setup. For memory, I'd go to Crucial for example and use their comparability tool to scan and suggest the ram. So many choices to really suggest any one. Any reliable manufacturer like Crucial, Kingston, Corsair are equal. It is important to change all the sticks to new for less chance of issues. The timimg, 9-9-9-24 for example and speed should match. 12GB ram is all you need for gaming. Even 8gb is it for most. But your tri channel would take the 12GB over 3 x 4gb sticks. If your into other apps and tasks that eat up the ram, then you'd know that better than us. Hope this helps and good luck. Edited by bprat22 - 09 Apr 2014 at 11:33am |

Thanks much for the imput. I went to the site and plugged in a GTX 780 vs. my existing GTX 570 and WOW! The 780 card was in nearly every catagory, an 85% to 120% improvement over my wretched beastie! I know what I'm doing with my tax return.
I found a perfect match for the memory and the EVGA X58 Mobo. Corsair has a 12Gb set #CMP12GX3M3A1600C9. It's geared toward X58 mobos. Latency and voltages are a perfect match for the existing 6 Gb of DS memory in there already. One question, please. I have 6 DIMM slots on the motherboard. Three of them contain 2Mb each of the Digital Storm memory. Can I just stick in the new (3x) 4 Gb sticks for a total of 18 Gb? Or, should I remove the existing memory, using just the 12 Gb from the new set? Thanks again for pointers Mike |

I would shelve the 3x 2gb sticks and play with the 3x 4gb new sticks of ram. You could use all six sticks but your overclock could be affected. Sometimes filling all ram slots puts extra stress on memory controller that affects cpu overclock. They are related.
It could work fine, but just be aware if overclock faults or memory faults pop up. Try it and see. Let us know how the upgrade goes. Edited by bprat22 - 09 Apr 2014 at 2:39pm |

Is your Win7 Home Premium? If it's Home Basic you might have a 8gb limit. Home Premium is 16gb limit at 64 bit.

I went with 3 x 4GB in a matched set and replaced the existing 3 x 2GB and the 12GB is great for gaming!
You will really like having more memory and a faster GPU. I made these same upgrades and it bought my pc up to date. The great thing about Digital Storm is the upgradeability! |

Sounds like a solid upgrade plan... The upgraded GPU will make such a huge difference and the RAM will help overall system performance...
