Hey Everyone,

Im looking at getting a new gaming rig, and historically I've built my own, but I've decided that I'll spend some extra money to have someone reputable do it for me. I've filled out my config advice below, and I'd love any input you folks can provide.

Thanks,

Budget:
$3000ish

Expectations:
I generally play MMO's, with the occasional shooter and I'm a fiend for steam sales. I want to be able to run 5760x1080 on Wildstar and if I decide to boot up some BF4 I'd like it to perform well at this resolution if possible

Usage:
Gaming, MMO's, Occasional Shooter

Special Needs:
I would like it to run to run quiet and have positive case pressure to keep dust out.

Saved Ticket #: Build #1009037

re critique my build please :) Upped my budget to 3k and made a few changes. Let me know what you think!

Hi Arterial.... Welcome to the forums.    That's a real nice build for surround monitoring but a couple of changes I'd recommend.

I'd go with the Coridium case, the Corsair 450D, for a little larger case with better airflow with 2x 140mm front fans.   The Virtue will work, so your choice.

The Z97M- plus mobo doesn't allow sli.   Change to the Gryphon.

I'd also up the psu to 850watt. Testers recommend 800watt minimum.

If the changes stretch the budget, go with 8Gb ram. Really all you need for gaming.

Good luck.

Thanks bprat22 for the feedback.

I've updated my build (993708) to reflect those changes.

Should I consider the r9 290x SLI? I wish I were more up-to-speed on the current state of affairs for AMD (Drivers, feature support, etc)

Also another thought came to mind, should I wait on the Nvidia 800 series? If I wait until the end of june for Devils Canyon anyway, i'd imagine we'd be closing in on a release announcement.

Thanks,

Until the 800 arrives it's tough to compare. Chances are the new 800s will be a big step up but I'm not sure of release date. Always better coming along.

The 290x is comparable to the gtx 780ti, so yes, the Crossfire 2x 290x beats the sli 780 by a good margin plus has more vram, 3gb vs 4gb. I tend to stick with Nvidia from past driver issues, etc with AMD, but that might be a thing of the past.

290x is good bang for the buck.

With the mobo change and PSU upgrade, it looks like a solid build! The CrossFire 290X will definitely perform better than two 780's in SLI. The added VRAM is also a major plus.

AMD with their recent performance and pricing is making it tough to ignore them like I use to.

Yea, i'm conflicted between strong driver support and features like Shadow Play and Game Stream (even tho I'll rarely use them, I MAY want to) vs the raw performance of the 290x's. Its tough.

Good to hear that you folks approve. I'll probably sit on it for a couple weeks to see if I hear anything about the 800 series and then put in an order!

Looks like a solid build whichever way you go on the graphics. As far as I have read the 290x's will out perform the 780 Tis by about 5% in Crossfire/SLI at 4K resolutions (for with 1080Px3 would count).

Yea, I'm definitely leaning towards the 290x's. I figure if I want a feature like shadowplay, i'll just go spend $100 on a capture card. Not worth gimping the setup for it.

Looks like an excellent build.   The 450d case and sli 290x were good changes from the original.   Go for it.

You are it can't do SLI? Z97M plus mobo allows you to choose SLI in config

His revised build, the 1009037, has the Gryphon mobo for sli, but i was mistaken,  this is a crossfire build.

The configurator does allow you to pick sli video card setup with a non-sli mobo, but it really isn't compatible.    The configurator doesn't catch it and DS would call the customer to correct it.  Big%20Smile

Order Placed! Thanks friends.

An FYI, with the 290x's in CF, I had to upgrade to the 1050w PSU.

I'm stoked, thanks again for the help.

I have a Dell UltraSharp IPS monitor from 3 years ago, the u2311h, and love it.  Great colors and contrast.  Liking my Dell IPS, they also have the Dell U2414H, a IPS with Vesa mount.  About $230 each on Amazon.    Something to check out. Big%20Smile

I would go to Amazon for example and search IPS monitors.  They have some Asus for well under $200.  I don't know the monitor's  reputations but its a good place to start.

Maybe others can chime in with their suggestions.

You should be aware that at least some IPS monitors suffer from significant input lag. That is time it takes to process before it is displayed. That lag can be important in gaming.
