Hello,
looking for a mildly futureproofed value optimized (i.e. cheap) computer.
questions:
which is better given I wish to avoid stage 3 cooling expenses the e8400 or q6600?
Should I go with the least expensive motherboard or is that unwise?
do I need the 800mhz memory? is the dominator helpful given I probably won't be overclocking? am I better off buying the e8200 and getting it OCed? Like my last machine, I intend to keep it until it dies, will any OC shorten its natural life?
is the 8800GT the videocard value sweetspot at the moment, or is there a better choice? is the gt a 45nm
Thanks for all input,
DtH

The E8400
Should I go with the least expensive motherboard or is that unwise?
If you are not overclocking, even the least expensive options DSO offers are very solid choices. If you are not trying to "set the world on fire" so to speak, with your overclock, these boards are still very good. do I need the 800mhz memory?
No, but it is your best value selection. Is the dominator helpful given I probably won't be overclocking? No. Go with the XMS. Am I better off buying the e8200 and getting it OCed? For a truly budget minded build, I would be tempted to go this route, but that brings us back to the motherboard and cooling. Like my last machine, I intend to keep it until it dies, will any OC shorten its natural life? A conservative overclock will not shorten the life of a CPU to any appreciable degree. Keep in mind, these chips are spec'd to run in low quality mass market computer cases with stock cooling, hooked to low quality voltage regs on crumby motherboards while drawing power from a low quality power supply. Compare that to running in a case with excellent airflow, a great power supply feeding clean power to a motherboard with decent voltage regulation, and a high quality aftermarket cooling solution, only with a mild overclock. If anything, comparing these two situations, my money would be on the overclocked chip for life expectancy. is the 8800GT the videocard value sweetspot at the moment, or is there a better choice? Depending on the resolution you game at, I might call the 9600GT the better value currently, but both cards are excellent. Is the gt a 45nm? No. Thanks for all input,
DtH
