I'm in the market for a good Surge Protector and UPS(back up power).
I want enough power so I can shut down if the power does go off, any suggestions? My rig from DSO will have a 1000w PSU also so does that mean I need a unit with 1000w or higher or how does that work.

I found this one on amazon

I picked up a BackUPS XS 1300 at best buy for 169.99

They had one BackUPS XS 1500 but the box looked like it had been through the mill twice and into the water a few times as well so I skipped it.

Will the 1300 VA 780 Watt BackUPS 1300 have any hope of powering a high end Gaming Rig or should I return it and find a 1500 somewhere?

Yea, I just wanted something that would have enough power so I could shutdown correctly. Will a 1500va handle a 1000psu?

Well SunFighter......Feel free to chance your rig to summer storms......Not me.....

I got into this whole gaming / Ds thing because I had a brand new MediaCenter  ( 1,400 for puter.....Add 500 more for Bigger PSU...Sound Card...Vid card) get fried due to a brownout in my house.....

now it was covered under warrenty.......But not the sound or vid card (I installed them)So they wer replaced at my cost.....

Then off to Kentucky  (twice for MoBo replacements) first one was bad.....And yes the puter was gone for 6 weeks total.....And is still not right.....

So I bought a Gateway FX w/ 8800 card in it (notebook) for  1,800 bucks for wife to use waiting for our DS to arrive.....

Total spent on puters in the last two months........Well over $10,000.....

So...Go ahead and cook yours.......You'll be sorry in the end.......

Oh...BTW...Can you afford to do what I just went through????????

I'm pretty sure he was using an age old tactic that is still known today as... sarcasm.

I don't know how much research you've done harleyman, but this brings up a good question.

Are there any quality UPS's out there that DO have support for Vista 64?

bf, it doesn't count when you buy it used.

Anyone out there familiar with the concept of "shaking hands with Jesus"?The only thing I plug directly in to a wall socket are my fingers.

Seems to me you guys are going a bit overboard with the UPS ratings. Just because you've got a 1000 W PSU doesn't mean  you need a 1000 W UPS. It depends on how long you want the system to run off the battery. I use a lowly APC 725. It keeps me going during brownouts and gives me the five or ten minutes needed to shut things down when the power goes off completely.

It's going to be very hard not to follow-up on the underwear joke.  I'm going to try.

Thats why I started this thread cuz i didnt know what to buy, thats all i want is enought time to shutdown if the power goes out.

So a 725 would be good enough you say..

Yes I am in the same boat I am having a hard time getting a straight answer I even mailed APC and have heard nothing.

I picked up a 1300 VA UPS a pretty nice one with a little LCD load display, I am going to hook it up to my current computer tonight to let it charge up and be ready for when my beast arrives, I just hope it can handle my new rig, I tried using the power configuration utility on the APC website, but it does not even come close to allowing me to select the hardware in my box...

I hope I will be ok
