Hey guys, I've read a few articles on this but can't decide the best method to use. Basically, I'm looking to purchase another SSD and want to transfer all the files that are not OS files to the new SSD leaving just the OS on the Primary SSD.
Is cloning the drive the only way to do this or can I set up the partitions on the new drive and just transfer the files I want to transfer without a complete clone?
After doing this I want to clean up the Primary OS drive by wiping the tranfered data from it. Would CCleaner be the best program to erase specific cells leaving the OS alone?

General files could be moved by cut/copy/paste (drag & drop) method. Anything else like software or games will most likely need to be uninstalled and then reinstalled (I believe Steam allows you to move your directory to a new drive). Attempting to just move program files will most likely result in them not working anymore due to incorrect registry settings and locations of where it thinks everything is at...

Well, that stinks. Do you know if cloning would work without corrupting program files? Edited by MICHAEL2A - 10 Jan 2014 at 9:23pm |

If you're doing a full 1:1 clone you'll be fine. It's only an issue if you're trying to split apart the OS from everything else...

Thanks fstcvc, sorry for the late reply. Do you know if it is possible to do a partial clone? For instance, can I move all files except the OS? |

A clone is exactly that - an exact duplicate of what you already have.

Some SSDs like those from Samsung give you the software to copy everything to the new drive for you also.
