Topic: Slade: From Alienware to DS Posted: 30 Nov 2012 at 8:10pm |
|
In 2003 I bought my very first computer, an Alienware Area-51, back when Alienware was still in its glory days. Almost 10 years later I'm still using that same Alienware. However The Pentium 4 is starting to show its age, and I've learned to live with not playing the latest games or doing any serious multitasking, in fact I've reached the point where I can't have more than one thing open at a time, and videos, (YouTube etc.) are choppy at best.
After lots of research, actually almost everyday or at least once a week for the past couple of years I finally decided on Digital Storm. Believe me I was close to going with another company, but I kept coming back to DS' website. I couldn't help but feel the same desire and excited to have a DS computer, as I had for having an Alienware 10 years ago.
(There was no way I was going back to Alienware now that it is owned by DELL)
Anyways last Saturday November 24th 2012 I finally configured the computer I wanted, keeping my budget as close to 2,000 as possible, thanks to several DS deals I was able to configure a Slade computer at $1,979. I decided to go from 8GB of ram to 16 GB of ram to put me over 2,000 which gave me a $100 dollar discount,, so 2,079 went back to 1,979. That was a great deal DS, thank you, and from what I understand DS is extremely busy right now because of their great deals.
Its been almost a week and as of today im at Stage 6 and getting very excited! I'll post a review hopefully sometime in the next couple of weeks,,, I'll be sure to include pictures,,,
However since I'm coming from a 10 year old Pentium 4 I'm pretty sure Ill be blown away and have only good things to say
So far the DS experience has been fun, and hassle free. Thanks for being an amazing company DS.

Welcome and Congratulations on your decision to purchase from DS. Coming from a pentium 4 , You will be blown away at your new pc. In my opinion DS makes some of the best pc's out there, and are reasonably priced also. Good Luck.

I'm sure you would love it anyway, but coming from a Pentium 4 to an Ivy Bridge i7 is like going from a Trabi to a Lambo.
You are going to be blown away. Congrats.

Slade Review 1 day
Yesterday my DS Slade arrive with much anticipation I lugged the box into my house and quickly began to open everything. I like brief reviews so I will do so.
I just grabbed my camera and went to the back of my computer to plug it in when I realized I had two USB 3.0 ports in the front. Very Convenient.
This is what I started with,, 2003 Alienware
Set Up before Digital Storm

Opening up
Nicely Packaged
----------------------------------------
Good Protection
-----------------------------------------
Here is the new machine, with protective tape holding paneling in place during shipment, I noticed the little scratches but they were just dust scratches and easily wiped off,,, front panel is a nice sturdy metal, unlike my old Alienware front panel which was flimsy plastic

The inside with protective foam, snuggly fit but easy to get out.

16 GB DS memory turned out to be corsair vengeance LP 16gb (2x8gb) very nice
In the end here is the new setup, and I don't use a chair, I use a couch :)
--------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------
-------------------------
Power Supply with red, blue, or white light
Now let me just take a minute to review the system so far.
----Decision, Ordering, Delivery---
+I did a lot of research and always came back to DS website
+Easy to customize, easy to order
+No problems with ordering or customizing or delivery
+Time from order to receiving computer 13 days.
----Arrival------
+Packaged arrived unharmed and in good shape
+good protection in box
+Easy to open and get things out
+Lots of accessories ie. spare cables, screws, plugs, driver CDs
----SetUp------
+plug it in and turn it on
+ready to go out of the box
-the hardest part was moving all my data from old computer to new computer, but that is a problem with Microsoft and apple itunes, not DS.
----Noise Level----
+Let me tell you, it is a lot quieter than my old system, in which I had to turn up the volume to my tv just to here the tv over the computer. Of course the DS Slade is not silent, it still sounds like a computer, and I can tell when the ATI Radeon 7950 dual fans turn on, but having said that it still is pretty quiet and unobtrusive, it sounds more like a white noise maker than a turbo engine. I have no problems with the sound of the 120mm Radiator Liquid CPU Cooler, actually I think that fan is the only thing I hear, besides the graphics card fan and maybe even the little Sabertooth motherboard fan. Anyways I went on to long, again I have no problem with the noise level.
---Final thoughts----
So far after a day of use I am loving this computer, it is, out of this world fast, a whole different world from the pentium 4 I was using,
Programs open up as soon as I click them, and close as soon as a click close. It feels like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders, I should have upgraded to DS a long time ago
Chrome works amazing,, internet videos load with no pauses, as well as internet picture sites like tumblr.
Adope Photoshop CS6 opens in a second or two,, well I could go on and on about how fast the computer is but you get the idea, its fast.
I downloaded far cry 3, it took a couple of hours to do the digital download, (using qwest 12MB) I haven't played it yet so I can't review graphic quality yet.
Well hopefully this post will help would be buyers to make up their minds and go with Digital storm,,,, I know they say their customer service is great, but what's even better is never having to call their customer service which I have not had to do.
Thanks Digital Storm
From a very happy and Digital Storm Loving customer!
J.Lewis
I see the pictures are to big to fit on the screen, I'll edit those now

John - I got a similar rig as yours but Nvidia 670 instead and just 8GB Ram and 120GB SSD. The difference between this and my old Dell XPS is night and day and my Dell (back in the day...) was a hot rig in its own right. I spent alot of time researching other boutique PC makers and kept coming back to DS for price, performance, ease of website usage, and reputation. The "free" 3 year warranty helped too. Far Cry is on my future list also as I've seen how my Slade can handle Max Payne 3 (amazing actually with max'd video), Witcher 2, Skyrim, etc. Having a rig like this opens up all games for me now and I'll know it won't choke on what I throw at it. I have beem more than pleased with my DS purchase and I don't see a need right now to even OC anything. Enjoy!

jhdeerslayer I have been extremely happy with my Slade. I actually forgot how much I love pc gaming because I had to run games on minimum settings with my old system. It's a whole new world running modern games on Ultra settings.
I actually have the little top and side panel off and I still don't mind the fan noise, still better than my old pc.
The Radeon 7950 is idling at about 44 degrees and went up to 60 after several hours of Far Cry 3. All 4 cores on the i7 3770k stay around 23-26 degrees.
It's funny because I'm still in my "old computer" mind set of closing all windows and not having a lot of things open. It's amazing to come to realize the cave of a computer world I was living in the past couple of years.
You should definitely play Far Cry 3, it continually blows my mind away with the graphics and the fun and engaging game-play,,, i'm not sure if it because it is the 1st game I can actually play with Ultra settings but maybe the best game I have ever played. Thanks DS for making that possible.

Far Cry is maybe xmas present to myself. lol I see my cores get to 50C during gaming and GPU to 79C. But... I still have all my covers one so without must be making a big difference for you. I'm in a cold (getting colder...) basement too. The Nvidia fan really cranks during this hot time from HWMonitor but don't even notice it.

Curious... how does the noise compare? Have you used Corsair Link to set profiles?

Here is what I consider a major difference between Alienware and DS right now
BLOATWARE
During the check out process at Alienware, you have to choose what crappy software, even if it is only a demo version, you want on the computer.
That stinks.
I love the fact that DS installs the OS, the drivers, hardware monitoring tools
AND NOTHING ELSE!!!!
and the fact that you get more for your money from D.S. and a well, you know. they rock.
That's how it should be.

Noise level is way way better. I have a small mini fridge close to my computer and that is louder now than the computer. The H100i with the proper fans makes almost no noise.
I did mess around with the CorsairLINK2 profiles and it was pretty easy to find the sweet spot, low noise but still cool temps. I have it setup so the LED on the CPU shows blue if it is cold (lower than 30) and will turn red if the CPU goes above 40 degrees and I have never seen it turn red.
