Budget:
<$3000

Expectations:
Tend to keep my pcs for 4-5 years with midlife upgrades (i.e. CPU swap, GPU upgrades etc).

Usage:
MMOs, maybe a few fps games, nothing major.

Special Needs:
Handling of large RAW files for photoediting, CS5, Elements. Looking at running Adobe Premier for HD video editing
- Trying to see if I can squeeze a 2 monitor setup here.

Saved Ticket #: 683937 = Ivy, 683942= Sandy E

Questions:
1) I've posted before on the forum. Been going back and forth on going with Ivy or Sandy E (3930). What are the opinions of the folks here since Ivy is finally out and the reviews are coming in?
Note that I'm also looking the longevity of the MB platform.

2) I initially went with Intel SSDs but am looking at the Corsair SSDs to reduce cost a little. However, I was aware that the Corsair controllers had issues (Sandforce). Have they been resolved or should the buyer still beware?

3) Another question is that when I select 2x 1 TB Drives for Hard Drive set 2, I'm assuming that I get 2 1 TB drives in a non raid configuration. Am I correct in this assumption?

Opinions are most welcome.

Thanks!

Hi dogwalker...For your video editing, CS5, etc your option B is the better choice.  The X79 quad channel ram is much better for those tasks than Ivy Bridge and the 3930 6 core cpu also much better and faster.  Of course this depends on the level of editing, etc you do and you woud know better than us.

Not sure if a single 570 will work on dual monitor gaming without cranking things down.  The games you mentioned I don't believe are very demanding.  Depends on the monitors  and resolution.  When you said dual monitor not sure if for gaming or editing etc.

If you don't specify RAID then it isn't.

Option B is right on .  If you went option A I would change the cpu cooler to D14 or Phanteks for reliability and great cooling.

Hope this helpsBig%20Smile

bprat,

Thanks for the advice. I've posted before and you helped me out then. But I decided to see what the Ivys brought to the table.

Do you have any opinion on this?
2) I initially went with Intel SSDs but am looking at the Corsair SSDs to reduce cost a little. However, I was aware that the Corsair controllers had issues (Sandforce). Have they been resolved or should the buyer still beware?

There are still many issues with the Sandforce controllers. I have found Indilix II to be the most stable so far, not sure if DS carries them though...

I would recommend swapping out the 570 for an AMD 7870, you get increased performance and greatly reduced TDP for 12 dollars more.

Thanks for the tip on the video card. I will probably go with your recommendation.

Sandforce still an issue? That's sad. Oh well, off to Intel I go.

I have a little different take on the Sandforce controller than Avelict. As far as I know there is no problem with the controller today. Some companies have problems with their firmware but OCZ (recently) and Intel do their own firmware while others have to use what comes from Sandforce. The best alternative to the Sandforce is the Samsung 830. In the case of Samsung they are providing their own controller and firmware that seems to be a winner.

Also, as far as I know Corsair uses Sandforce's firmware and if their is a problem they have to get a fix from Sandforce. DS has sold a bunch of Corsair SSDs and I have not seen anyone complain about their performance on this forum. If budget was a consideration I would not be afraid to buy a Corsair SSD. I just think the Intel has better backing and expertise especially with firmware. Right now I think that the Samsung 830 is the one to beat.

We've had hardley any issues with the Corsair SSDs and this is one of the reasons why we use them in our featured builds.
