Budget:
Anywhere from $1,200 to $2,500....if it can be justified

Expectations:
Decent computer that will last me at least 3 years, with moderate daily usage

Usage:
Will be used primarily for gaming, but nothing crazy. Mostly games like World of Warcraft, Diablo. Will also watch the occasional movie on it, use the web / email. Potential to fraps the referenced games.

Special Needs:
I would like a SSD in addition to a normal HD. Bluray welcome, but not necessary.

Specifications:
I have a 23" LCD. Off chance I could potentially get a second monitor of same size.

My question is, with the above uses, would an ODE 4 be overkill for my needs? Would an ODE 3/2/1 do just as well?

Hi Vizo....Welcome to the forums.
For the monitor which i assume is 1920x1080 and those games, the ODE 3 with single gtx 680 will do it just fine.  If you want to game on multple monitors then the ODE 4 with sli gtx 670 would be my call, plus with lvl 3 and lvl 4 you get the SSD and blu-ray player and a better cpu cooler.

When you say 'nothing crazy' Big%20Smile  then that would mean high settings on the most intense games would be ok I am guessing.  IF you wanted to play games like BF3, Crysis warhead and others maxed out then the ODE 4 for single monitor would be ideal.

Hope this helps and good luck.Big%20Smile

I was on the same boat as you Vizo. I thought about getting ODE LVL 2 prior to my purchase. But let me tell you this, I would've regretted that decision. What I end up getting is ODE LVL 4. You can't really go wrong with it.

ODE 3, SLI for a 1920x1080 monitor (I'm assuming here) is a bit overpowered.

Thank you for your opinions everyone. I had a few more questions now between the ODE 3 vs. the ODE 4.

1) What is the main difference between the motherboards? Just the "thermal armor?"

2) Difference between the "performance" and the "vengeance" series ram?

3) Obviously, it seems like the biggest difference between the two is the vid cards. Are there any benchmark comparisons out there?

I guess what I'm getting at is, even though the ode 4 may be a bit overpowered for my needs right now, is the value add enough to justify spending the extra $400?

The ODE 3's mobo does not support sli, 2x graphic cards, meaning you could never add a second Nvidia card.  The ODE 4's does plus the ODE 4's Sabertooth is made up of better parts and I believe a longer warranty.  3 yr vs 5 yr.

Here's a link benching the 680 to sli 680.  The test site doesn't do sli 670.  The 680's have about the same performance as the 670 so the sli 680 is a bit better but very close.

The difference in the memory isn't anything you'd see.  Both are very good.

Hope this helps.Big%20Smile

On the SSD, it doesnt seem like as if 120gb will be enough room once the OS is loaded a a couple games. Am I wrong on this? Also, are people aware of any issues with the corsair brand?

I had started configuring a dreadnaught with the 180gb Intel SSD, but I feel as if 16gb RAM is entirely to much and could not configure it to be lower. Sorry for the naivety, but am I missing something?

Start with the Dreadnought, level 2.  The level 3 is the quad channel ram X79 motherboard that requires 4x 4GB ram to fill 4 memory slots.  The Z77 is dual channel and can use 2x 4GB.

So I made the below. Gives me a little larger of a SSD, a necessary amount of RAM. Gets rid of the blu ray I won't use, and I can still upgrade to SLI if I want.

I also like the fact that the case is good for cooling purposes, as I may have to fit the case into a small area, that is not particularly open on all sides.

Thoughts?

You pretty much nailed it.  Great build.Awesome

But, I always have suggestions. Big%20Smile  The gtx 680 is tops and hard to argue against, but the gtx 670 is about the same gaming for alot less money.    Also, the Vortex 240 is also a very nice unit,  but for tops in reliability, the D14 gets it done with alot less to go wrong.

Just my thoughts.  Either way, it does look great.

Good Luck and keep us in the loop.Big%20Smile

Thanks again bprat! Question about the HAF X case. Knowing that there is room at the top for another fan, is there anyway I can have one added when configuring the system? I don't see an option to add another cooling option.

There is no option listed for the fan.  You'd have to tell them on the phone or in special instructions at bottom of config.  They know the fan and it usually is the CoolerMaster MegaFlow 200 Silent fan unles they are using an equivalant..

If you keep the Vortex 240mm cpu cooler then the fan won't fit and doesn't apply.  The rad for the Vortex mounts up there.

Hi Vizo,

I had DS add the extra fan to the top of my HAF X case.  As bprat22 said add it to the special instructions at the bottom of the config page.  DS charges $30 for the fan and instillation.

I hope this helps

No contest.  The ODE lvl 4 will give you much higher gaming if you moved to more gpu intense games or a higher resolution monitor.  Your latest build does have a better case, the HafX, and a more reliable cpu cooler, the D14, but you are sacrificing in the graphic card area.

The single gtx 680 might be all you need, so your call.  In a year or two the sli, gtx670 might be very welcome.

With your build you do have the option to add another card later, if needed.  But, in a year or two new cards will be out that everyone will be going for.

For the needs you posted, the games and monitor , the single 680 will be great and you will have the best Hafx case and a great cooler.    Tough call.

Question about a new Monitor as it relates to my build. While I am getting a new pc soon, I am going to recycle the old one and give it to my wife for some basic photo editing and minimal graphic design stuff she does for fun. That said, she'll need to take my current monitor.

What is a good, if not great, 24" monitor that is available at a decent price? (sub $300)

I use the Dell UltraSharp U2312HM, actaully lasy years model, and it is a very good monitor.  On sale at Dell for $239 right now.

Others might chime in with their picks.

Hi Vizo,

Your last build is right on. Good job.

You will be hard pressed to find a better deal than the Dell 2312HM for $239. This is an IPS monitor with a great picture. Dell also makes a U2412M that is a 24" IPS monitor. Dell has that on sale right now for $299.
