Ok so im a bit paranoid or just plain uninformed but I currently have microsoft security essentials, malwarebytes(free), Superantispyware(free) and Norton 60day trial.

I've recently wiped my pc and started over only to find out norton was available so i thought id try it.

Turns out instead of using 1.50+- gb of ram now its using around 2.50gb

I plan to eventually buy a paid version of something i like but not sure exactly what i need to keep and let go, and if possible not use much ram.. any suggestions?

Also i downloaded but not installed avast.

Thx!

I would say that if you were going to pay, the best out there is ESET, and if you just want free, Malwarebytes and Avast should keep everything off, and as you probably know, the resources held by them are insignificant when compared to Norton.

There is another thread on antivirus software (links below), where you could check out all of the arguments for each, but those are the major contenders.

I'd also recommend reading the MaximumPC article that I mention in the second one.

according to the test done, bitdefender and trendmicro are the best out of all the antivirus out there. those are paid softwares btw. I use bitdefender and it really is awesome. You can get more info for bitdefender at http://www.hopreviews.com/reviews/bitdefender-total-security-2013/ if you need. but from what you have already, i think it is pretty good. I've used them before.

I personally use what I like to call my "four-hit combo" of:

1. Common sense
2. Avast!
3. Malwarebytes
4. AdBlock Plus on Chrome/ABP + NoScript on FireFox.
