From time to time people bring up questions on multi-gpu SLI setups. If it's worth it, where does scaling stop, etc...

I found a nice video that Linus recently released shows a comparison of 16x vs 8x. This comes down to a 5390k vs a 5280k cpu's... This video shows that if you don't plan on running a four card set up, perhaps saving the ~$200 is worth it, as the performance difference is, as I've been saying, like 1-2 fps.

You joke, but I'm that guy who spends the $200 to get the 40 lanes over the 28 lanes for the extra fps. -_- It's my addiction.

I understand the diminishing results from additional GPUs, but cost aside, could you actually affect performance negatively by adding too many?

Well, that's a tricky question in the sense of how do you define negatively.

Some games don't like SLI at all, though you will typically still see a gain in fps.

But other games show an fps gain from 1 card to 2. From 2 cards to 3, and then... you'll sometimes see that the FPS actually goes down by 1-2 (sometimes a few more) when you add in the 4th card.

The thing is, these are averages. So while the average as technically gone down... thus a negative affect on performance, you are still way over what you'd get with 1 or 2... and the 4th card most likely still gives you higher spikes... but really, a 1 second high spike doesn't replace a lower average.

Now, in terms of say 3 or 4 cards causing you to have less FPS than say one card. That doesn't really ever happen in todays world anymore. Even for games that don't support or have SLI profiles.

Thanks. I only play strategy games - Starcraft II, Command and Conquer, etc. and I guess if I'm "gonna be dumb, I better be tough". Sometimes going all out is..............
