even if a card is non sli, can you still put more than one in your system and still have it work?

Most modern cards like the gtx 960/970/980 are sli capable.  If you install just one, then the other can be installed later, as long as the motherboard is sli capable and the power supply can handle it. 

Some cards, like the gtx 750ti,  are not sli capable.

You can also add a video card, not hook it in sli, and use both independently.
