From my (very cursory) inspections, every line now has the Nvidia 900s in the configurator, with the exception of the Vanquish II line.
So, as danjw1 so eloquently and succinctly answered; now.

Wonder how well it will run the sims 3 and sims 4 because i was planning on getting my system either this Christmas or sometime next year with a 700 series but i guess it will be the 900 series instead.

I think the OP was talking about the mobile 980M for the Behemoth laptop.
Unless he meant a behemoth desktop rig, all tricked out. Edited by bprat22 - 19 Sep 2014 at 7:58am |

Arkansas... Looks like the 980 will be about 10-20% better than the 780Ti and use a lot less juice to run. The 970 will be about equal to the 780.
The 780Ti, 780 and 770 are all being discontinued. |

Yep, the Desktop 900 series has been added, but not the mobile 900M series for the Laptops. Not sure when for the laptops but DS does stay on top of it.

Looks like roughly the same dimensions as the gtx780, so shouldn't be an issue.

I am trying to decide if I should upgrade my GTX 670 to a GTX 970. I assume my CPU 3570k would still be fine and not a limiting factor.
Might be a nice present to myself. |

From all the reviews I've watched today, the GTX 780 Ti out performs the GTX 980. The GTX 980 isn't meant to replace any GK110. It's meant to be an upgrade for people still running the GTX 600 series and below.

Loving the first reports on 980, but I'm curious about how drivers factor into something like SLI scaling. Everyone mentions that card speeds can improve as newer drivers are released, but can newer drivers affect scaling too, or would that be more an issue of new card architecture being released (i.e. scaling wouldn't be improved until a "Ti" version of the 980).Right now, while the 980 looks to beat out the 780 Ti, the gap lessens by the tri-sli mark, which leads me to believe that tri-780 Ti's might beat out Tri 980s. Of course the power consumption still beats it out, just curious about how this might improve over time. Also assuming that with a card drawing this little power/temperature, putting one under water could lead to some serious overclocking potential?

Meller, could you elaborate a bit? I haven't been able to watch any testing videos today, but from all the literature I've seen posted, it looks like the 980 is absolutely a successor to the 780 Ti. It's clearly a massive upgrade for the 6xx series and lower (and I'm running a 2xx series), but it also appears to be an upgrade from the 780 as well.

The most in depth and best review I have found. And while it is on par if not just slightly better than the GTX 780, it is not the replacement for the GTX 780 ti or GTX Titan Black. The intended audience for the GTX 900 series is to be an upgrade for users still using the GTX 600 series and older. |

it's not a replacement (or more accurately and upgrade) for current GTX 780/780ti owners, but it is technically a replacement due to Nvidia phasing out those cards. As you said, it is more of an upgrade for 500/600 series owners.
while not an overwhelmingly big performance increase, the new tech (not to mention cost savings) in these cards will pay dividends (over and above comparably performing 700 series cards) down the road as game developers develop software that takes advantage of them. i can think of one huge mmo (EQ Next) that will specifically take advantage of the voxel tech in these cards. also, they haven't even released Big Maxwell (GM210) yet,so it's too early to put a fork in performance gains. that's what i'm waiting for. That is always true. They don't expect most customers to upgrade from the previous generation graphics cards. This is the review I read: http://www.anandtech.com/show/8526/nvidia-geforce-gtx-980-review. It is also very detailed. The 780 Ti, does win in one benchmark but at 1080p resolution. The 980 should also have better overclocking, particularly when boards with improved power delivery are released. Also, with the newer technology that is supported the 980 give it a longer life. Once the version of the 980 "ti" comes out or the flagship version of the 900 series, we'll see 780 ti/titan black replacements. Which supports what you're saying, but it won't be the 980. Or when the GM110 (rumors pointing it'll be called GM110) comes out, it'll replace your flagship 700 series. Maxwell will replace Kepler, there is no denying that. |

The 780 Ti was a fully enabled GPU with no units blocked otherwise it was the same GPU as the 780. A lot of recent rumors of what Nvidia is going to do have turned out to be false. If it is a GM110 that would suggest a Maxwell 1 not the Maxwell 2 that is in the GM204. The 27nm process that the current Maxwell parts are based on is very well understood by Nvidia. I wouldn't be surprised that Nvidia has fully enabled the GM204 in the 780. So, I wouldn't assume we are going to see a 980 Ti or a Titan 2, or whatever they decide to call it, any time in the near future. The 980 beat the 780 Ti in most of the benchmarks that I have seen, with one exception. Now, it isn't enough to justify to most people with a 780 Ti to upgrade. I will agree with that, but neither Nvidia or AMD expect their customers to upgrade with every generation. They expect them to skip at least one or two generations. That said if someone it looking for a flagship card now, there is no good reason to go with a 780 Ti. It has lower frame rates in most current games, and that will come more pronounced as the new technologies work there way into game engines. I just don't know why anyone who is looking to buy a flagship card would go with a 780 Ti, unless it was for a deep discount over the 980. |

The GTX 980 is essentially a GTX 780 Ti replacement. There is no reason to specifically look for a 780 Ti unless it is much lower in price. New technologies in the Maxwell lineup will definitely improve frame rates in future games. Not to mention, that extra 1 GB of VRAM will help as well.
