Hi guys,

Ive been lurking around for a great while and have really gleaned some great information on some good builds out there. Its been about 4 years since my last build and its on its last legs. I am looking for a build that's as future proofed as possible and purely for gaming and very minor multimedia.

I plan to use a Dell 23 inch Ultra Sharp and I'm generally not a SSD fan, so I usually go with two HD's in mirrored format, after losing data one time.

Any helpful advice would be great, thanks!

Hi Predatorus......Welcome to the forums.
 
It shows that you've been 'lurking' around for awhile, because that build is right on. Awesome  
 
The sli, 2x gtx 670's will play great with the Dell 23" Ultra Sharp and the Noctua d14 cooler is tops.
 
You probably already know this, but 8Gb is all gaming will use, but the 16GB  might help with multi-media or "just in case" as alot will do.  But, for just gaming, 8Gb is great.  Your call of course.

I'm getting close to finally ordering this beast and have decided to also add the optional fan on top. Question, what version of the GTX 670 is DS currently using? Is it the over clocked version? I see no mention of that part like in previous builds.

I believe, and don't hold me to it Big%20Smile, but I vaguely remember the gtx670 factory oc versions were pulled because of problems by the manufacturer.
The ones you're getting are not the oc'd versions unless it says so in parenthesis.

So the question is would dual over clocked SLI  680's (that DS provides) be better than the standard 670's? I know the performance is close compared to the stock version (especially the price considered), but does the overclocked version justify the cost for future proofing?

In my humble opinion...No.  The difference in price for oc'ing with the same card is pretty low, like $30,  but to spend another $289 a card for oc gtx 680 as opposed to gtx 670 no oc, is tough to justify.  That's over $570.  In a year or two the new 7 series cards will be out, maybe.  If it was me, save the money for that if needed.
 
For your 23" monitor at 1920x1080 you really wouldn't see it for some time, if at all. If you were gaming on a 30" at higher res, then a case could be made.
 
 
The gtx 680 oc does give you more room to grow no doubt, but what someone is willing to spend is up to them. 
 
Others will disagree and that's awesome, but for me I wouldn't.Big%20Smile

It is, of course, your choice. And if you have the money, anything is possible with computers.
My recommendation: Go with 2x SLI GTX 670.
Overclocking only puts additional stress on already perfectly fine Graphics-cards. Also on your resolution: You will never see the difference (In 5 years, maybe; but now, definitely not. Unless you plan on having 120 Frames per second or NVidia 3D Vision.)
bprat22 is absolutely correct. To not get outdated you will most probably swap your Graphics-cards anyways in about 4 years, at the very latest. Or before, if you have the money and something truly awesome happens to come out. Or, when, God forbid, your cards die upon you (Hopefully will not happen anyways).
However, you might argue, the GTX 680 is this one truly awesome thing you've been waiting for. In that case, go ahead, you have my full support. You know... I can't talk... I've chosen a GTX 690 purely due to its good looks and low noise. And for at least another 12 months I have a single 1920x1200 Dell Ultrasharp U2410.

Alright my apologies for asking so many questions but I have really been battling over whether or not I should upgrade to a 3930k to try to future proof the possibility of using extra cores. I know the general consensus that is not worth it if this is for pure gaming but hear are my reasons.

I know currently there are some results that BF 3 can take advantage of this :

and I know there are rumors that the new XBox 720 release in 2013 will be come variant of a 6 core. Knowing those two things I think its quite a possibility that we can see the 2 extra cores and 6 extra threads really being used in a 2-3 year time period, leaving me to just upgrade my cards as they become outdated.

Also a big question is we also know that higher OCed Quad Core will perform better than a Lower OCed Hexacore, will there be a difference in the OC between the 3770k (with the D14) and a 3930k (with the Stage 2 stock liquid cooling)?

Lastily the difference in price between the two builds is $300, thanks!

That is a real nice build.   I can't answer the oc question but I can say you forgot your free t-shirt. Oops
All kidding aside, in 6 months you won't even remember the extra $300 you spent.  Will gaming use 6 core in 2-3 years?  Only in the top secret, vault-like rooms buried miles beneath the surface can the  game developers say for sure.

Thanks for the update Bprat, if only I could tell the future Cry.  Can Alex find out if there is any difference in the OC Stage 2 between the 3930k and 3770k?

There isn't much of a difference between OC'ing those two CPUs with Stage 2, but, the 3930k will run hotter and may slightly not overclock as high as the 3770K due to the extra CPU cores.
