Hi There.
I am thinking of ordering a computer from DS.
I do a little gaming, mostly Counter Strike.  I can't keep up with the young guys on the newer games because I'm getting old. (Vietnam Vet.)
I do some video stuff but I use a MAC for that.
I have an old P4 system I built many years ago that needs upgrading.   So, what would be a good config. for an old guy that still likes to game some but probably doesn't need a top end system?  I will probably be purchasing a new monitor as well; so what is good in monitors?
Thanks for any advice..

Hi sgtrock.....Welcome to the forums.   Tough to recommend a pc without knowing your budget or monitor.   Lots of us game onthe 23/24" Dell UltrSharp monitors.    For a good pc for the money,to start, take a look at the ODE lineup which covers a wide range in budget and give from good to excellant gaming.       I'm about your age and play BF3 online everyday, get my head handed to me and go back for more.      It' s not the age. It's the attitude

Hi bprat22
The Dell monitor is fine with me.  The technology I am using now is very old and anything will be an positive upgrade.  Thanks for the advice on monitors.
I have been looking at the ODE system but can't decide on 1, 2, 3 or 4.  I think 3 or 4 may be overkill for the games I play but with a better system the newer games may be more appealing.  I can afford to purchase the level 4 but I really don't want to spend money for power I won't utilize.  Also, I notice that this system comes with 8GB of ram and no upgrade buttons.  Is there a reason for only 8GB?

The ODE' s are pre-builds for faster shipping.   That' s how they can give such good pricing.      You can custom build but it would be more for the same performance but you can pick a different case, psu with better warranty,etc.    8GB of ram is all gaming can use.    More than that is just wasted money.

Hi Sgtrock....I am a Vietnam vet too.  Combat medic in the Airforce.  Was in country from Nov 71 to Nov 72.  I can highly recommend the Dell Ultrasharps.  I have been using the U2410 for the last 2 yrs.  Here is a link to a side by side comparison of the 24" (2 of them) and the 23" Ultrasharps.  Here is the link:

The two 24" have resolutions of 1920 x 1200 and the 23" has 1920 x 1080.  In the ODE builds 1 and 2 they use the AMD HD 7850 and HD 7870 respectively.  Here is a link to a really good review of both of these cards.  In the game sections you will see results of the GTX 580 (in ODE #3) also.  The GTX 680 isn't in the game sections as it wasn't out at the time this review was done in March.  The GTX 680 is the latest release from Nvidia and is the fastest grahpics card for the PC market out there.  Here is the link fro the reveiw:

One thing to note in the review.  In the games section they show results for the 1920 x 1080 resolution but not the 1920 x 1200.  I think the reason for this is the 1920 x 1200 isn't been made any more by almost all manufacturers.  Dell being an exception.  You will get slightly less performance at the 1920 x 1200 resolution that what is listed for the 1920 x 1080.

I hope that helps.

The difference between 1920 x 1200 and 1920 x 1080 has to do with the screen aspect ratio.  1920 x 1200 uses a 16:10 ratio and the 1920 x 1080 uses a 16:9 ratio.  These ratios are width to hight.  If we are talking inches as an example it would be 16" wide by 10" high vs 16" wide by 9" high. The reason most manufacturers are switching to the 16:9 ratio has to do with modern TVs and manufacturing costs.  You may have heard of 1080P in TVs.  Modern widescreen LCD TVs use the 16:9 ratio.  So monitor maufacturers have adopted this same standard to make them the same as TVs.  It also makes them less expensive to make.  The 16:10 ratio monitors can display any thing that was made for 16:9 ratio standard, such as streaming TV programs or videos.

OK. I ordered the ODE V2 Level 3 from Digital Storm and a Dell 24" Ultrasharp from Newegg

I priced all of the components and could have put it together myself but I considered that Digital Storm does the burn in and has to deal with potential "dead on arrival" components, returns and replacements that I may have to go through purchasing individual parts and doing a self build.  I went through all of that on the last computer I built and it just isn't worth it to me.  Just remembering standing in the Fry's returns' line (multiple times) was enough to tip me in favor of purchasing a nice system from Digital Storm.

Ok now..
I received my ODE 3 yesterday.  Unpacked plugged in and running out of the box. Big box...Wow

My first impression was; it's bigger than I imagined.  I haven't had time to push it hard but it is a lot quieter than my four fan home built.  Digital Storm was very good about keeping me up to date on the build and notifying me when it shipped.  I'm liking the Dell Ultrasharp that was recommended too. (Thanks bprat22)  I did play some Counter Strike CZ, but that game doesn't push the ODE at all.  I am going to have to get some newer games to take advantage of my new horsepower.
