    Posted: 28 Nov 2014 at 11:54pm
Budget:
$4000

Expectations:
Looking for a rig to do it all. Multi-monitor setup that will handle gaming and utilize many other software programs.

Usage:
Gaming and programs:

I want a build that will pretty much handle any game. My main game right now is WoW, but I have a decent selection of games on my Steam library. If I want to play something, I want the rig to be able to handle it with no problems.

Regarding the programs I want to be able to use it for web development/design, which would mean it would need to handle many of the programs in the Adobe Suite like Photoshop and Fireworks and whatever else I may need to use. I would also be using it for video editing in Premiere and be able to handle rendering quite well. The big kicker and probably the most important to keep in mind is I would also like to be able to work in Maya and/or Max for 3D stuff as well as After Effects. I know that working in 3D programs call for special equipment, so it's important that the rig would be able to handle this as well.

Any help and guidance would be greatly appreciated. I'm definitely buying a PC through DS and want to be able to pick something out before their awesome sale is over. ;)

Hi Scifer,

I'm assuming the $4000 budget does not include the monitors, correct? If so, do you already own them? What resolution and how many of them do you intend to use with this system?

Also, how is your time split between gaming and professional work?

The Velox case is about the best airflow for air cooled systems.

Not sure how your apps, like Light room, After effects, etc, utilize a 6 core processor but the X99 also has the much faster ram speeds and a much wider memory bandwidth by up to 50% over the Z97.  That might make your tasks a lot smoother.

The sli gtx 980 is to handle both gaming and rendering in general over 3 monitors.

Hope this helps you get an idea.  Big%20Smile

Hey all, thank you for the responses.

I hadn't looked into monitors yet, but I know I will be needing to upgrade from what I currently have. I'm guessing I would be going with a minimum of 2 monitors and will probably be shooting for 1440 @27" or might shoot for a larger main screen and the above for the secondary, but most likely two of the same.

As far as the split between gaming/work, I'd probably say 50/50 if not a little heavier on gaming.

Any other suggestions? Was hoping to get as much feedback as possible before purchasing. Thanks!

bpratt22's build looks right on for what you are looking for Scifer. You have the processing and graphics power to handle anything you are going to need it for. No need to mess around with a good configuration. Good luck though!

I like bprat22's build as well. The only thing I'd change would be to bump the second HDD to 2TB or more since the files you create in those applications can get quite large.

I asked an old coworker for some advice and to take a look at the build as well since he built the PCs for the department I worked in (game QA). This is what he had to say:

The PSU is a bit low for the CPU and both cards since Nvidia recommends 500W min for the cards (each). He also made the comment regarding the HDD and suggested I bump it up to 2TB. The last thing he mentioned was about the overclocking and said he'd be worried about noise. Anyone able to comment on the noise part and maybe the PSU?

The power specified by NVIDIA for the minimum PSU is for an entire system with one GPU. Obviously, as you add GPU's to a system, there is greater power draw, but for additional power requirements, look at the TDP for the card (165W in the case of a GTX 980).

As for heat, I'm not sure exactly how DS OC's the machines, but ASUS has some features in their auto-OC suite where it can dynamically OC the processor depending on the load (lighter loads can tolerate a higher OC). The fan control on the motherboard can also significantly reduce fan speed as well...Most of the time under casual load on my machine, the only fan running is the one on the power supply because my motherboard turns off the fans on the cooler and my GPU shuts its fans off.

Here's a link to a very reliable testing site for sli gtx 980.....
http://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/geforce-gtx-980-sli-review,4.html

850watt will do it but if your a bit nervous about it then bump it to the 1050hx. 2-3years ago a 1050 watt psu was typically needed for sli but the newer cards are much better energy usage.

Good luck.

Was hoping to have gone through their payment plan to get my rig, which didn't work. Having said that, is it still possible to get a decent rig that would do the same stuff (obviously not as good), but could piece all the extras in the future for 2-2.5k instead of the 4k I initially estimated?

So to rephrase, buy a PC for 2-2.5k that I could still do all the same stuff, and still run at 1440 on 2 monitors.

Scifer,

Check out the below build. With the current promotion, this comes out to $2616, including shipping. You could scale back the second HDD a bit, or potentially dial back the RAM to 8GB if you do not want to exceed $2500. I'd strongly recommend the i7-4790k processor.

Looks great to me.       Going with the 970s does give you more money to play with, and be within 20% of the 980s.

Here's a link to compare the cards.....

I don't agree with the video card choice, personally. Building a $5000 rig and not using the 980s just seems like an odd decision to me, especially since you'll want to drive a 1440p monitor capable of 144hz.

I did look at adding the 980s and will probably be switching them in since I'm already at the price I'm at. Would I go with the normal 980s or the ASUS Strix Editions?

The Strix are open fans and will put a lot of heat into your chassis. If you still remain with an SLI setup, it is generally advisable to go with a blower cooler on the card if you're staying air cooled.

Does The Strix actually have better performance than the stock? Also, I upgraded to the Corsair Airflow Performance Edition Chassis fans - are these actually better than the ones that have the lights added to them? Looking at the numbers, it seemed the colored ones might have actually been better (as if I know what the numbers actually mean).

Thanks again all! Love how helpful the community is and has been.

32 Gigs of Ram is overkill from Most games esp  WoW., You would do better putting that money into a larger primary SSD  maybe go for the 500GB. Esp if your going to place your games like WOW on this Drive. And maybe bump up 6the  120GB third drive to 256GB.  Only changes I would make.

However if your going to be doing a lot of mulit tasking  with more than 3-4 programs running at once plus your game, then leave the ram alone, all depends on how you play and work.  Keep in mind with only 2 screens things can and will get kind of cluttered with a lot of programs running. I use two screens at work and really would love to have three, would make what I do a lot easier. But two screens are better than one and I remember doing my work with one screen, frankly I do not know how I managed with only one screen Big%20Smile

The RAM choice was for non-gaming programs I would be using like Premiere, Maya/Max, and After Effects. The 3rd SSD was a recommendation from DS to use as a scratch disk and I'm not really sure how much space I'll be needing for it.

I've only ever used up to 2 monitors whether at work or at home and it has suited me well, however, 3 of the ROG SWIFTS next to each other looks too dang good to pass up on, so I'll eventually have 3 of em. And yea, using one screen is just not the way to go (even though I have to at home currently).

Thanks for the advice.
