I would eventually like to upgrade to Watercooling for both the CPU and 2 graphics cards.. but I am not sure I can afford to do this right now My main problem is My Desk top Gamer a prior custom build with Gigabyte Motherboard, AMD 6 CORE processor, Single GTX 485 EVGA GPU is trashed with a bad motherboard and my old G72 Asus Laptop is overheating just playing WoW for 20 mins even with a Cooling. pad. The Desktop gamer is only 4 yrs old and I was hoping to get longer use out of it, But have been told replacing the Motherboard alone would be just a stop gap fix on the old components. Guess what I am getting at is I would not like to spend 4k and 3-4 yrs down the line end up having to buy a new computer, upgrading is fine I had worked up another configuration but decided I had enough Money to go SLI now instead of in the future.. My main concerns is controlling the heat.. I live in Texas and even with A/C it can get hot in the apartment I am currently in. In fact old Gamer could heat my room in the Winter it blew out so much heat,, which may have caused the problem with the motherboard. I do not want a repeat of that problem which is why I am going with an Intel build instead of an AMD build. Any comments or suggestions are welcome thanks |

Hi Kaelara,
Based on your comments I have put together a suggested system built on the Velox case. You don't say what kind of home work you do but if gaming is your main function you don't need a 6-core CPU. You can get the Velox in a 6-core if you just have to have one. Take a look and see what you think. I gave you a year longer warranty and was still several hundred under your system. The Velox case has better cooling than the Apollo with 140mm fans. The mb is reversed so the graphics cards are on top instead of the CPU. The two side fans will blow right into the graphics card area. If you ever decide to go full liquid cooling, this case has lots of room. The big problem is the case won't be available until the end of November. That is not long but your computer problems at home may not let you wait. This system is just a suggestion and I realize not exactly what you were looking at. If it doesn't work for you then someone will be along with suggestions for your Apollo system. Hi Frank and thanks I like what you suggested just have some questions
1. Explain the difference/advantages between the Z97 Pro Motherboard over the Rampage? 2. is there any advantage in using as faster ram ie DDR4 2800 VS DDR3 1866? 3. The PS in my Old system is a Corsair 1200 modular PS Could I reuse it? or could there be a hidden problem that might crop up Any one want to buy a computer for parts.. Motherboard is bad but the rest still tests out as functional including a nice Full Corsair case and an EVGA GTX 485 GPU.. or should I sell it for parts on EBAY :P And your right my Laptop is about on it's last legs.. but what is 2 weeks if I can get a better build. |

Hi Kaelara,
A few things to consider: Yes, the LGA 2011-3 sockets, like what the Rampage V has, will be supported by Intel for the current and next couple generations of their high-end processors. However, the chipset shows its age quite early on. Take USB for instance: The X58 chipset for the LGA 1366 socket processors came out well before USB 3.0, but later on in the life cycle, a number of motherboard manufacturers were using 3rd party controls (like ASMedia and Marvell) to allow for the functionality on board. My old X58 board lacked it, so I put in an adapter, but there were a lot of compatibility and bandwidth issues with it, so it wasn't the best solution. The X99 chipset will be the same way with USB 3.1 and the Type-C USB connector; while USB 3.1 is only twice the bandwidth of USB 3.0, it has additional power capabilities that allow up to 100W (USB 3.0 can only get up to 10W) of power to a connected device, like a laptop, tablet, or stereo. So, for a Z97 board, while the 1150 socket will only be good through the next generation processor to be introduced next year and is the last Intel platform to use DDR3 memory, you will save quite a bit of money and have that chunk of change to upgrade more of your system later on down the road. Things like water pumps, reservoirs, radiators, fittings, and flexible tubes don't really advance much over time...I'd suggest getting a system that does what you need it to, while spending the premium on parts that will last a while (chassis, cooling, etc.). Here is a configuration with a water cooled CPU and GPU that can be easily upgraded to other components (water blocks will probably need to change, but some GPUs are now sold from the factory with water blocks): https://www.digitalstormonline.com/configurator.asp?id=1096111 Also, if you're only using a single 720p or 1080p screen, a single late-gen GPU should be able to handle the highest settings. If you look at the benchmarks out there, they're only really running into problems when you get into 1440p and 2160p. And, while memory speed won't hurt the performance, it isn't the bottleneck for system performance for gaming. |

Hi Kaelara,
I think you will be glad you decided on the Velox case. 1. I would have to spend some time to really compare the two boards. I don't think there is an Z97 Rampage. There is the MAXIMUS VII HERO in the Z97. Not a lot of difference between the Maximus and the Pro. The Maximus is pretty with a lot of color. The Pro has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. If you don't want Wi-Fi and Bluetooth then go with the Maximus. The two boards use different on-board sound but I don't know which is best. There are cheaper SLI boards if you wanted to save some money. Other members may have better information for you. 2. The timing of the memory doesn't make a big difference. I would go with what DS recommends for your system. 3. Sure you can use your old Power Supply but you would have to send it to DS for it to be installed, maybe for a fee. But it is up to DS. You do have a problem that the PS is old. But, since it is modular it would be easy to change out if it failed. The system by no-name above looks good. One problem is if you decide to add another GPU later on you will have to hook up the water cooling your self. Or send it back to the factory. You can do it if you are comfortable with water cooling. Another option you might consider is to go Air Cooled on the CPU and eliminate the water cooled all together. This Velox case is a beautiful case for air cooling. I am off to Orlando to celebrate our 50th Wedding Anniversary so won't be back on line for a week or so. There are lots of people here to help you. Frank Edited by FrankW - 17 Nov 2014 at 7:35am |

Thanks for the Help. I know pretty much what I want,, but the most I have done was installed a new graphics card ...and even that had me shaking in my boots I do not mind sending the system back to DS for upgrades,.. I abhore Best buy and the geek squad what I want to say about them , can not be posted on a public forum.
I took me a while before I settled on Digital Storm,, I looked a few other vendors Maingear, Xoptic, to name two but while they had some quality gear and builds, they just did not have what I have found at DS, a depth of knowledge and a willingness to provide it for free I need to get my funds free of an IRA and then I will place the order. I am still tempted to just go all the way and go with your Water cooling system for both the CPU and the two graphics cards. I might reuse the power supply because it did not get that much use 3 /1/2 years before I had to shut the system down for what turned out to be a bad motherboard. really hate to trash a 1200 Watt PSU.. though I might ship it to DS ask to have it evaled and if it is not good enough then they can just trash it or keep it.. Texas gets pretty hot, and heat is not a good thing with any computer.. and while the system would do just fine Air cooled with my current monitor... what happens when I upgrade to two that can and will push the 980s ?? Happy 50th hope you have a great time... |

Well it all looks like I will be placing my order next week I am hoping the Velox will not be on backorder then . Still have not decided on Water-cooling but I am leaning towards getting a second Monitor..right now I have a -4-5 yr old Samsung 50000;1 HDTV Monitor ( while it may be 4-5 yrs it has only seen use for 2.5 yrs) screen size is 28 inch.
Any recommendations for the second monitor? While I would not be against purchasing it from DS.. it will be easier simply to buy locally Or should I put the money into the computer and hold off an a second monitor? I do plan on Multi Boxxing in WoW just running a second application nothing really fancy. I use Multi screens at work and really like having that second screen.. pushing employer to get a 3 rd screen :P |
