So, I recently purchase an x17 Level 3 Laptop that I'm stupidly excited to get. I ordered it on 02/17/2012 and it should ship in 10 business days. My old desktop and laptop crapped out for a while.
Here are the specs:
17.3 1920 x 1080 LED Backlit
Processor: i7 2860QM 2.5Ghz Turbo Mode to 3.6Ghz (Quad core) (8MB Cache)
Thermal Compound: Premium IC Diamond CPU and GPU Thermal Compound
Memory: 12GB DDR3 1600MHz
Primary HD: 750Gb 72000RPM (SATA 3Gb/s)
Optical Drive: BluRay Player & DVD/CD reader/write
Wireless Card: Intel Advanced-N 6230 Wireless LAN Module
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580M 2GB
OS: Win 7 Home Premium
What does the community think? For a laptop, is this a pretty good setup. I read that I should have consulted the community first, but I think I'm pretty confident that this little beast should run pretty much any game, especially since I am not a big FPS person.

Gratz man!!! Welcome to the waiting game. I ordered my new tower on the 14th and it is in the final stages now ships todau I hope. (premade series so faster build times).
Anyway the community is great here and that is why I bought so yes consulting them can save a headache or two. But from what I see seems like you got a good laptop going there. I wish you the best of luck and keep us posted. Remember take pictures of the unboxing and write up a review to help others that are looking around. |

So, for those of you who have purchased laptops, about how long does it usually I take. I understand it can take up to 10 days or longer. Just wondering when it usually enters stage 2. I'm chomping at the big to play some games the way they were meant to be played and to be able to stream them.

Laptops don't follow the same stage process as desktops. I'm pretty sure laptops just go: Stage 1 > Shipped. So you're probably further along than you think

I can't wait. Will arrive Tuesday and I am off work Tuesday and Wednesdays. My timbuk2 bag comes tomorrow and I have a razor mouse but I might get a different one too. Goodness... and my birthday is in march. Early bday to me.

So, in preparation for my laptop, I went ahead and splurged on a very awesome laptop bag from Timbuk2.
I'd like to say that this is a bag that might make Mary Poppins proud because it fits my entire life in it. Here's a view of the inside: So, I had missed the UPS guy and had promptly started freaking out. Luckily, they allow you to pick it up same day! HOORAY! Upon receiving home, I placed the box on my desk: As you can see, my desk is wide and expansive. In fact, I walk on it. ...... Don't judge. I live in an attic with awesome roomies. And thus, the box is opened! The bag, which I already took out, looks kind of like this! When I say that it "looks kind of like this," what it is I mean is that it is exactly that. It's pretty nice, and I'd use it if I needed just my laptop, but I'll be using my Timbuk2 bag mostly. I had read from another post that there was a rather large power pack. I didn't realize how freaking huge it was until I saw it. Here's a picture of it still packed! AND THEN I TOOK IT OUT. (That's what she said? [It's ironic because I don't like shes]) It took forever to get this strange stuff off the back: But, that said, once I did and powered in on. (Slight confession, it took me about 2 minutes to locate the power button) HoLy MoLy it starts up. Luckily, I had read another post on the forums and found that the product code is on the bottom. I'm glad I read this stuff. I usually practice good due-diligence. Still enamored by the giant power-pack, I took yet another photo of it: I mean, was that necessary? I assume so. I'm certain others at coffee shops will have power-pack envy. uMad? AAAAND, for the last image, I suppose a desktop shot is necessary! I'm partial to android. I would assume all you PC fanboys out there should be too. If not, well... I bet my phone can beat yours up! BAM. (I'm so mature for going on 26 in less than 2 weeks) Anyway, there it is. Now I need to just reinstall tons of games. |

Awesooooome!
If you think that power adapter is large, you should have seen the one I had on a 17" laptop back in 04, yeeeeesh. Loving the desk, I have one just like it, albeit in a different color. |

Bahaha. I wish I had room for a desk, but I like having the open space I do have! I'm now installing so much back on here. My goodness.

That is the laptop im looking on buying i know another post has this info in it but i like to compare things so if you dont mind could you take some picks of core temps and what is the battery life that one post i was talking about before said 3-4 hours for intensive gaming could you check what it is. like i said i like to compare so if you dont have time to do these things it okay.

I can definitely do that. I don't often use the laptop to game without battery, so I probably won't be able to answer that end of your question, but I can definitely do some CPU and MEMORY stress tests to see how they perform and get you a screen analysis. I'll have to find a GPU stress test. However, after playing some 4 hours of Civ V, everything held up nicely. The fans were pretty quiet, and while it emitted heat, the machine didn't really lag or cause any big hiccups which was nice.
The only hiccup I had so far was a BSOD memory dump, mostly likely because I was trying to install too many games from Steam at once. |

Yeah, I wouldn't worry about that too much unless it starts happening again, especially if you were installing loads of stuff with no restarts throughout the process. |

So, something alarming that I have noticed is that the power pack on the charger makes a funny noise? It is very faint, but it sort of sounds, I dunno, like a tiny squeak inside of it? Abnormal?

It really depends. I am not at all familiar with DS's line of laptops unfortuantely. Some adapters will make noise, end of story. You can replace them 50 times, and they will still make noise. It depends on the construction of the internals, namely the construction of the electrolytic capacitors in any given model. Electromagnetic interference can also cause a squeal, as can an inductive component inside of the adapter that hasn't been installed correctly. There are a large array of possibilities, but first: Does it charge the laptop properly? Does it squeal only after a certain amount of time? Does it squeal when plugged into the wall but not the laptop? Does the sound come and go?

If it's a small noise, it's just the inverter in the power brick that is making that noise. Sort of a electrical hum. However, if you think it's something else, we're more than happy to help you replace it. Edited by Alex - 29 Feb 2012 at 4:01pm |

I think you're right. It's a very tiny noise and it's like an electrical sound. So long as it sounds normal. It's pretty imperceptible, but I've great hearing.

The only thing is that it's not a constant buzz. I can see if I can record the sound and upload it.
Edit: No dice. You can barely hear it. If it gets worse in the next week, I'll definitely contact support. Edited by dignified pauper - 29 Feb 2012 at 4:37pm |
