Topic: Modems Posted: 19 Oct 2014 at 1:15pm |
Does anyone know if its possible for modems to go bad? Lately i have been experiencing issues with my internet speeds occasionally dropping and losing connection and not sure if its the modem or my network card going bad. I would think if it was the network card going bad i wouldn't be able to connect to the internet at all.
One tech support person has said that the modem seems to be working fine and its probably my computer but my internet will work fine for hours without issue and sometimes it will drop. Has anyone ever experienced a thing like this? |

I have an older modem that looses connection once in awhile, usually during peak periods like on Sunday afternoon. Not always though. Being an older docsis 2.0 and only 1 or 2 channels down, it's an occasional issue. It's a Motorola sb5102. When I upgrade it'll probably be the much newer sb6141. Up to 8 channels down, not really needed yet, but 4 channels for sure. Old one has to hunt more for a good connection.
Modems can go bad or just not meet newer needs. Edited by bprat22 - 19 Oct 2014 at 1:40pm |

I was thinking about buying this and testing it out and see if its our modem that is causing issues: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Motorola-SB6121-SURFboard-DOCSIS-3.0-Cable-Modem/20742485
The modem that we currently are using was provided by our isp four years ago so it could be possible its going bad or it could be a peak period issue since the school is down the street where i live but i don't know. My teamspeak ping whenever i am watching a stream will spike over 1000 sometimes and make my internet go down and it never use to do that Edited by ArkansasWoman777 - 19 Oct 2014 at 1:42pm |

The sb6121 is actually my other choice. It's a little cheaper but still meets today's needs. Difference between the two, is the 6141 has the 8 channels down and the 6121 has 4 channels down, if I recall. Most only need the 6121. The other is just in case. I have Comcast and they actually give the 6121 more stars for testing results, but that just mean more testing done.

Don't go out and buy a new Modem. No point. Especially given that most ISP's will want you to have a DOCSIS 3.0 but what they don't tell you is they only accept a very few model/versions on their network.
When you're having bad issues, do a www.speedtest.net and a www.pingtest.net and The speed test let's you see if it's both your up and down stream suffering and the pingtest let's us view packet loss. Next, plug directly into the modem (in case you're using a router) and retest to verify once more. Should you be experiencing packet loss and less that desired speeds for either up or download speeds, call your ISP. Nearly all ISP's I've ever dealt with can remotely diagnosis a modem to verify if there is noise pollution in the connection or even if the connect/or/modem is starting to fail. At all cost, it's their responsibility to supply you with a new working modem. No point if wasting your money when you're already paying for it in your service fee's. |

Meller, i have called tech support 4 different times and they pretty much have said that they see no issues with the modem on their end. They remotely accessed it the other day and i didn't have any issues with connection issues until hours later.
I do check speedtest whenever i start to buffer when watching streams and the download speed is just trickling down and then the connection is lost or it will go back up. Maybe i can convince them to change modems and see if it solves the issue. |

Exactly, hassle them. Don't give up. They are just lazy. Most of the time they subcontract their work out instead of hiring their own people. So they want to do whatever they can to not send someone out because then they have to pay money.
Be a complete pain and if they won't help... tell them you want to speak to a manager about cancelling your service with them (it's a bluff). They'll quickly change their mind and have someone out there quickly to test your line and bring you a new modem. |

An ISP only has the responsibility to give you a working modem if you pay their monthly rental and use theirs. My experience with Comcast is that they will always tell you you have an ' end of life' and leave it there. End of life still work. I've been hearing this from them for years. The modems we talked about are on Comcasts list. Not sure if you have Comcast.

No i don't have comcast, i have Ritter Communications so i don't think we have a monthly rental on our modem.
It could honestly be just peak times but idk Edited by ArkansasWoman777 - 19 Oct 2014 at 3:28pm |

I had comcast and I know that if you pull up your service agreement, they have to keep you refreshed with tech every x amount of years. And if you're on contract then they have to keep you updated in case of failure of equipment.

Regardless, watch how quickly they decide to help you when you mention you're wanting to cancel your service for a competitor.

If it's their modem then I agree with Meller. It's on them.
Comcast charges $8 a month. That's $96 a year, like they don't make enough already. No wonder more people are dumping cable. After 8-10 years, I'm way ahead of the game and it has been 99.9% reliable. Dropped connections can be tough to figure. Whenever they do come out and check, the line could be light. |

Hey Meller.. unfortunately around her there is no competition, for cable. There is dish satellite and in some areas , not mine, get AT&T UVerse I think it's called. Each cable provider has certain towns staked out.
Exit.. my tablet auto spell changed around Here to around Her. Technology doesn't always work. Edited by bprat22 - 19 Oct 2014 at 4:05pm |

PFft, y'all got to learn how to play the system. Don't even mention a competitor then, just say you want to cancel service.
-_- you two are really disappointing me right now. I expected more out of you two. |
