All seems well, but my internet is crazy slow.

I went from a horrible 2001 laptop, to this very nice DS PC.  On the horrible laptop, I would download at 3MB/s.  Now, I'm getting 600kbps.

This is my first time using wireless, so maybe it's something I did/didn't do.

All I've done is installed the drivers from the disc that came with it, and screw in the antennas.  Is there more I should have done?  Why so slow?

Thanks!

After running some speed tests online, it's back where it was.  Strange.  Maybe it just needed to "warm up" haha.

Nvm!  :)

Awesome   I love it when a problem fixes itself.  Strong

Sometimes a modem/router/pc reboot will fix weird issues.

So, I was wrong but haven't had time to seek a fix till now.

Still getting 1.1MB/s max, when before with awful hardware it was 3.1 max.  I've never worked with desktop wireless before (only laptop, phone, etc where it "just works") and have no idea what to do.

All I've done is attach the antennae and run the install disc.  ANY help would be fantastic.

You might try uninstalling - reinstalling the drivers and make sure they are up to date.

A corrupted driver does weird things to wireless.

I just found this.

http://www.asus.com/Networking/PCEN53/HelpDesk_Download/

It's driver 5.0.35.0 for Windows 8.1 64 bit  and mentions installing it before installing the hardware.

Don't need the utility i don't think.

Yeah, I found that and tried it.  Yelled at me and quit because I have Win 7.

I had uninstalled the previous one, to try that one.  So I had to run and find my CD again, and install those drivers right back.  Now it's back to (around) where it should be, 2.7MB/s

This is very strange.  Hopefully this time it can keep these speeds, if not I see a dropdown to change the driver to Win 7 and I'll try that.

Although I see it says "The first version driver" and is listed as being from 2012, so I'm sure that won't help either!

Had another thought on this.

The antennae are at the back of your computer. Usually people will place them in a "V" position. try another position from what you have = straight out, straight to the sides or a V if you have them another way.

If your desk has metal legs - move the rear of the computer away from the legs.

How many walls are between the computer and router? A wireless repeater or range extender may be a consideration.

I'm still inclined to go with the driver, though. You should be able to find a driver on the ASUS website from 2014. You didn't mention 32bit or 64bit but try this link and select which OS you have.

Hi SaffronsGhost,

Here are some things to think about.

1. Do you have your desktop at the same location that you were using the laptop? This is critical if you are going to compare the speeds between the two computers.

2. Do you have your router security locked? Is there a chance others are using your router?

3. How many devices/computers are using your router at the same time. You may be bandwidth limited at certain times of usages with many users.

4. Your PCI card may be defective.

The problem is now infinitely worse.

Out of nowhere, my computer has decided to not connect at all. In fact, when I click the utility icon in the system tray it says "ASUS Wireless LAN card is taken apart from your desktop PC".

I made zero changes. I opened it up and the card is there, of course, and plugged in normally. The lights on its back are not illuminated.

Considering the quality of everything else, cannot believe this was the best card offered to me. Absolutely shocked. It literally broke less than a month into use, and never performed well.

I have no clue what to do now other than take it in for servicing, which is laughable for a brand new computer.

Do DS employees not read these forums? Please help.

Hi SaffronsGhost,

Your system is under warranty. Give DS a call and they will fix you up. They might have you do a couple of things but if the PCI card is bad, they will replace it. Things happen and this would be considered an infant mortality. Just because a card fails early in its life does not mean it is a bad card. Happens all the time with all electronic equipment. You need to call right away as the factory is closed on the weekend.

The front USB ports don't work properly either, things get "disconnected" from them (with no physical change made) constantly.

This is...not okay. I'm going to have a nasty call to make tomorrow.

To answer your last question other than Alex and Nav, no the DS employees do not frequent the forums.

No need to be nasty when you make that call just stay calm and collective.

Ok... Warranty work, tech support and customer care are what DS does very well. A call usually gets everything moving in the right direction. If not, there's the emails directly to the big bosses there at DS...

etc

As I was reading your thread from the top, I recall a complete drop in bandwidth from my machine a few months after I received it...turns out my router was bad. Just something to think about.

I'm sure DS will do what they can to make it right.

Since my computer basically has no use currently, I'm back on my terrible laptop. Still gets 3-mbps. It's nothing on my end.

Thanks for the emails just in case! And I meant nasty in the unpleasant sense, not screamog sense. Heh. I'll report back when I ever have time to make the call.

Hi SaffronsGhost,

I'm sorry to hear that you're having an issue with your wireless connection and USB ports:

Wireless:

The ASUS adapter we offer is actually a very good unit and performs well. If you are getting a weak signal, it could be due to some sort of interference or your wireless adapter is trying to connect to your router with a newer speed/channel that your older laptop was not able to take advantage of such as the 5GHz channel.

What I suggest you try is to change the wireless mode on your computer to the "G" bandwidth only which is 802.11G to see if the issue goes away. You can also try changing the wireless mode on the ASUS utility to 2.4GHz instead of 5GHz.

USB Ports:

We do test the USB ports in-house as we use them throughout testing and QA. Either the header connection has gotten loose during shipping that connects to the motherboard (our team can help you with this) or your device isn't playing nicely with the ports, have you tried to see what happens if you plug them into the back?
