Well I just started getting into the RTS genre myself, and the first one I bought was the Wacraft 3 Battlechest! Awesome game! But you have to be VERY patient when playing online. I've only played about 6 matches so far but I've lost every one of them... badly But I still need to play the Campaign so maybe that'll help me out... Oh and I've played the StarCraft expansion "Brood Wars" and it really surprised me. I thought I wouldn't like it because let's face it, the game is like 10 years old lol But like I said, I was pleasantly surprised and enjoyed the little bit that I played of it. But I also heard that a real simple RTS that is good for n00bs is Command and Conquer 3. But I've never played that so I can't vouch for it, just what I've heard.

WC3 and SC are amazing games, although the learning curves are VERY steep (as in, unless you're amazing at micromanaging every unit and building, you're gonna get stomped).
C&C Generals is much better than 3 in my opinion, and is pretty cheap now.

At blizzcon they had the WC3 and SC Finals. They said they could do over 500 commands a minute. Most of the online players are not that good but have everything down

Definitely play through the single player story lines. Think of them as the online tutorial. For an RTS noob, you may want to consider the Battle for Middle-Earth games. If you're not into the lord of the rings story line, you may not like the game, but it definitely has an easy learning curve. Another great RTS would be the Dawn of War series, but it's extremely difficult online.

Awright I will for sure! It'll be hard to step away from the online arena (even though I get beat up pretty bad) but I'll do it Well I am into the lord of the rings storyline so I may just have to check that one out. Oh and I DL'ed the Dawn of War and Soulstorm demos from Steam and I really liked them! But I could see how they would be tough online

Yeah Nomad, ever since they added the unit limitations the online game came alive! It used to be about who had the biggest guns, now it's about who has the best strategy.

Ahh really? Yeah I like the game uses a kind of terrain system where for instance, if you are in a crater, you have more cover than the dudes standing on the street.

Awesome! Although you may want to think about C&C3 a bit more. Don't take my word for it, but I've been looking at the game more and lots of people are saying that there is not a lot of strategy involved, just basically who can build a mass of tanks the fastest etc. So that may be what you want, or it may not be. Just sayin' ;)

Look me up to. My name on there is ncavig, but I have a lot of aliases because it's so hard to find games once you win. My buddy and I held on the #1 spot for 2v2's for a few years and we play for fun now. Can give you guys some tips My current name is digitalgrin which I'll probably be on for the next few days until I stop finding games. Btw, the 500 commands a minute is a bit exaggerated. Most pro's go for about 150 key strokes a minute. The max I've seen is 200ish and most of the time people spam key strokes and alternate between binded units to get that # up. It's a pitiful sign of skill the higher that number is.
