So after looking at every gaming laptop and deciding on one, I was recommended to this site by a friend of mine. So glad I didn't order the one I was originally was going to. Great reviews on here :)
I'm replacing a laptop to play WoW and D3 and want it to not have it crash or freeze on me every 5 min and not get so hot I can fry an egg on it (I do use a cooling pad. I can't use a desktop and would like to get some input on this build. Thanks Specifications: Chassis Model: Digital Storm Lance 15.6 Inch Laptop (Model: S:8258) Display: 15.6 Inch (16:9) (Resolution: 1920 x 1080) (Anti-glare) LED-Backlit Display Processor: !SPECIAL PRICE: Intel Core i7 4810MQ (Up to 3.80Ghz) (Quad Core) (6MB Cache) (LIMITED TIME ONLY) Thermal Compound: Stock CPU and GPU Thermal Compound Memory: 8GB DDR3 1600MHz Storage Drive 1: 250GB Solid State - Samsung 840 EVO
Storage Drive 2: 750GB 7200RPM (SATA 3Gb/s) Optical Drive: DVD/CD 8x Multi-Drive (Writes and Reads DVDs, CDs) Wireless Card: Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260 + Bluetooth 4.0
Graphics Card(s): NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870M 6GB with NVIDIA Battery Boost + NVIDIA Optimus Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (64-Bit Edition)
Recovery Tools: Windows Recovery Toolkit (Bundled with Windows CD) Virus Protection: FREE: McAfee AntiVirus Plus (1 Year Service Activation Card) (Not Pre-installed) ($35 Value) Office Suite: - No Thanks Cooling Pad: Cooler Master NotePal U2 Plus (Aluminum & Rubber Finish)
|

Hi Frenzi... Welcome to the forums. That looks like a great build to me. Get the best gpu you can but spending another $200 plus for the 880m will get you another 20% or better gaming but your budget will decide if it's worth it.
Good idea with the cooling pad. Gaming laptops, being small inside, tight and limited airflow can use a hard surface to help. No cooling issues just that laptops do run hotter than desktops. Good luck and stay in touch. Edited by bprat22 - 21 Aug 2014 at 2:16pm |

Thanks for your input. I'm going to see if it's in my budget to get the 880m. Also, what's the difference is between 250GB Solid State - Samsung 840 EVO and the 256GB Solid State - Samsung 840 PRO besides the obvious 6GB difference. I'm definitely going to order from Digital Storm. It's just a matter of which build to get.

There is a lot of on-line info on 840 Pro vs 840 EVO.
Pro is meant for heavy workstation use and Evo for notebook/desktop usage. Biggest difference is steady sequential throughput, which limits the Evo to 130 MB/s after 3 GB when internal SLC cache is full. Both drives are reliable. The Pro has 5 years warranty and the Evo 3 years. EVO life expectancy is around 19 years; PRO life expectancy is almost 70 years. Your mileage may vary. Keep in mind that 19 years is probably 3 or 4 times as long as anyone has ever used the same hard drive. But this does gives you an idea of the difference between MLC (Pro) and TLC (Evo & regular) NAND. Even though the speeds are nearly identical and the random speeds are pretty close. I got the Pro version, and have no regrets. ==== edit ==== Tom's Hardware tested the lifespan of the Samsung 256 GB PRO "... So let's calculate the lifespan. We consider the first uncorrectable error to be the end of the SSD. For the first one that was after 764 TiB of written data, and for the second one that was after 768 TiB of written data. That the two failed so close together could indicate that the lifespan of the Samsung 840 SSDs is fairly constant. However, two SSDs aren't representative of the thousands that are out there. If we take the 764 TiB and an average of 10 GiB of writes per day, we arrive at a lifespan of 214 years. Keep in mind that we sequentially write and fill the SSD which gives us write amplification factor of only 1.04 or 1.05. That's the difference between the write commands sent to the SSD and the writes executed by the SSD internally. The general assumption is a WAF of around 3.0 for normal consumer use with SSDs that don't employ compression tricks. That translates to a lifespan of 75 years. Don't know if I'm too late, but I second bprat's assertion regarding the 880M. Get it if you can.
And honestly, if you go with just the EVO and not the Pro, I don't think you'll regret it, especially if it allows you to buy the 880m. |

Congrats on the Lance. Would love to have a review of it when you have a chance to play around with it for a while. We need lots more laptop reviews!

I absolutely will. I'm almost starting to regret not getting the 16GB of memory, but oh well 8GB will do just fine
