Looks like a solid build. My only concern is the sli Strix in the Slade 550d. The case is the right pick for its excellent quiet characteristics and low light pollution but that's because its a closed case with top and side acoustic panels. The 980 dualfan Strix will dump all its heat into the case and not out the back like the reference 980. The 550d with 2x120mm fans in the front and rear cooler fan might struggle to get the heat out. For that 550d case I'd go reference single fan cards.
I can't say what the heat will be, so I'd call and ask DS what their testing is showing before you order. The advantage of the 550d over some of the other cases is that you do have to option to remove the acoustic panels and add fans to the top and especially the side panel. Hope this helps. The 1200 watt psu is if he wanted to quad sli, 4x gtx 980. The 850 watt for sli is just right.

Right but if he goes with the 1200 it leaves room for upgrades and less strain it the ps which in theory should allow it to run cooler.
But you are right it's not required for his fit above. I just like to plan ahead. |

You're only going to strain a PSU if you are running at or over the rated wattage. You need to remember that the rated wattage is for continuous operation and the power supply can handle short periods of greater draw than it is rated for. The only real advantage you have to using a PSU with a high rating is, only with the semi-fanless kinds, the fan will be stopped at low loads, reducing noise in the system. But, that comes at a cost...
600W would be the minimum for a system like this. 850W would be able to handle 3-way SLI later on down the road, if desired (the Deluxe board can only handle up to 3-way; need to upgrade to the Rampage V Extreme to handle 4-way). Edited by - 24 Apr 2015 at 9:00am |

Thank you for your help. I don't see me going to 4 or even 3 Video cards so the PSU should be fine. I will drop the Strix and go with the Reference 480.
Thanks Again. |
