Topic: How far can i upgrade GFX card Posted: 03 Oct 2014 at 7:08am |
Greetings all! I've been enjoying my DS rig now for over 4 years and it's stil kickin. However it's time for me to start thinking about upgrading some things inside. The first and foremost would be the video card. Currently I have the 5870 1gb card. Now, I would like to stick with ATI for now but i wanted to see what the best available option I have to upgrade the video card with my currently system. My sig and the link i am about to post has my specs and i wasn't sure if there would be a compatibility issue with the newer cards out today. Here is the link to my review on these forums which i did back on may of 2010. I haven't upgraded any parts yet---> http://www.digitalstormonline.com/forums/my-ds-pc-review-tidf10729/
If yous could, let me know how far up i can upgrade my current video card or point me in the general direction where i can start looking. I'm eager to play the Shadows of Mordor but it looks like my current card is just squeakin by minimum requirements. Thanks! - Rob

Hi Muz.... You can easily upgrade to the R9-290 or 290X, keeping with the ATI cards. Your mobo and psu can handle it. The X58 is a Pcie 2.0 and all new cards are Pcie 3.0 , but that's backward compatible with little or no performance hit with single card.
The 290X does have a higher clock with the reference cards and more texture units and processors, but in reality, the 290 is about 5% behind the 290X in gaming benches I've seen. Price would depend if its worth it. Here's a link comparing the 5870 to the new 290x.... Close to a 3x performance increase. http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1062?vs=1056 Hope this helps out and stay in touch. |

I would say you should switch to a GTX 970. Lower power use and close to or better than 290x performance for less.
I see zero reason to pay a premium to get the same performance or worse in gaming and stick with an AMD. |

I'll have to compare the top 3 cards from each(single card) and see what would be the best performance for the price. Thanks for the help!

After doing some research, I will be getting the GIGABYTE GV-N970G1 GAMING-4GD GeForce GTX 970 4GB 256-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 HDCP Ready G-SYNC Support Video Card ($370usd)from the egg when it becomes available. This will be my first GeForce card in about 12 years so the switch from AMD will be one for the books. Thanks for the help! Now, just gotta wait till it's in stock.. haha

Nice choice. Like Ariktu suggested, the same performance, give or take vs r9 290x, but better thermals, power draw and probably quieter.
Let us know how it goes. Edited by bprat22 - 04 Oct 2014 at 6:26am |

You got it. Yeah the lower temps/noise and even the price is what made me decide this. Plus coming from a 5870, it's going to be so much win i'll need to buckle my seat belt.
