    Posted: 05 Apr 2012 at 7:09am
Hi!  I'm excited -- getting ready to order my first rig from DS!   Any comments on my initial config would be very helpful.  My budget is around $3500 (for work and play..).  I do HD video editing, gaming with all the features on high (have to feed my eyes), work on the system 8 hr or more so need it quiet and cool -- I generally keep my system long enough that I upgrade video cards at least once, so I like some head room -- and a speedy processor that will last a few years, as well.  This would be my first time with SSD drives -- any comments on this would be great.  I've configured with RAID 1 since that's what I'm used to with conventional drives and couldn't risk a disk failure.  Do I still need to be worried with SSD?  I plan on loading my OS and apps and current projects on the SSD drives, and using the TB drive for data and back up.  Help!  And thanks...

Hello Lynn,

Welcome to the Forums!

One thing I noticed is you want to do raid but you only have 1 HD (in this case a SSD) and 1 Secondary drive (a traditional HD) to my knowledge, that won't work.

You would need 2 SSD or 2 HD to make raid.  However, as I understand it raiding SSD is generally not worth it in terms of performance.  If you truly need redundancy then raid one is an option (with matching HDs).

I do light video editing, I would see no problem with this PC doing video work or gaming.

You do not need the noise package, the systems are said to be quite quiet.

The Hailstorm is also supposed to have good airflow so your cooling should be ok as well.  The new 680s draw less power and less heat generation according to reviews.

If you are looking specifically for more art kinda stuff DS also makes PCs for multimedia development.

(Note.  You should be excited.  Digital Storm makes... insane awesome PCs. Big%20Smile)

The two changes I made to your very good config was...

The hailstorm is a nice case, but works best when you have a liquid cooling system like stage 6.  The stage 2 vortex isn't true lc.The HafX case is the best aircooled case.  The HafX has 230mm fan in front , 200mm on top and a 200mm on the side blowing directly onto the gpu's.  If you ever went to multple gpu this would be real important.

Working your rig 8+ hours a day you really want max air flow to keep things cool.

I changed the cooler to the H100.  This cooler is quieter and better performing and is what DS says they need to keep cool the X79 platform's higher heat generation.  I also bumped up overclocking to stage 2 oc, the H100 can handle it no problem.

I'll let others more in the know comment on Raid.

Ooops...meant to put in Win 7 Pro...just in case you ever needed more than 16GB ram.

See what ya think and good luck Big%20Smile

Here is a better system. You don't need the 1200w PS unless you are thinking of going tri-SL!.

Things are becoming clearer thanks to all your help -- question - I noticed that the chassis fans in the model we're specs pull in air from the bottom.  I have dusty environment and a long haired cat.. I'm wondering if I should consider a chassis with a dust screen or one that pulls air from the side.  My current system gets really dusty/furry.  Any thoughts?  Otherwise I'm settling in nicely to my configuration but for trying to decide what to do about RAID 1 mirroring.  I'm good at backing up my data, but there's always that one time.....  any thoughts?

Thanks again for all your help.  This forum is awesome!

Most of the air pushed into the HafX is through the front and side fans, both of which have dust filters.   I'm not sure about the bottom mesh where the psu sits.   In all cases we recommend the rig, any rig,  be put on a desk or table, etc or someting 2-3 feet off the ground to get it away from where all the dustballs and pet hair likes to linger.  I also have cats, and sitting  two and a half feet up on an old file cabinet leaves it almost dust, hair free.   A quick wipe once every couple of weeks has kept the inside brand-spanking new.

I'll let someone else talk Raid setup.

Good luck.

Hi bprat22,

Sorry that I came in after your post. I didn't see it until after I posted. My wife was pushing me out the door as I was typing.

Lynn, make sure you post your final system so we can see what you settled on.

Hi Lynn,

Second pbrat22, get the case off the floor - even 6"- 1ft will make a real difference. Also if you live in a dusty environment (beyond hairballs) you might want to consider a positive pressure case as an alternative to the HAF X. I have an FT02, which is positive pressure, and it stays remarkably clean. Don't know which of the current DS cases are positive pressure and cool well, but Alex should know.

Hi Lynn,

I noticed in your first build you used the Hailstorm case. You just mentioned the air coming in from the bottom. Are you thinking the Hairstorm or the HAF-X?

I am not a fan of RAID with SSD. You don't need the perceived speed increase that RAID-0 gives. But you can configure two HDD dives in RAID-1 if you have important data to preserve and you don't back up your files. The best arrangement in my mind is a good SSD like the 180Gb Intel 520 and 1 1Tb WD HDD for storage. Keep your currant games and Win on the SSD. If you have a program that you use a lot and load/transfer times are important to you, than add them to the SSD too. Games that you seldom play should be on the HDD. Then move them to the SDD when you decide to play them again.

I have had a PC every since they were on the market. I have never operated in RAID and I have never lost any data. I did lose one HDD but no data. It started acting flaky and I just replaced it and copied over the data. Everyone has to find a system that works for them.

Here's what I'm going with -- adding in some MS Office, keyboard/mouse.  It's Frank's second config with dual 680's.  Whoopee!  My current monitor is 27" 1920x 1280, but I might upgrade within the next year or two and I might as well use up the watts in the power supply...  I'm getting off of RAID, doing the suggested OS and gaming, plus some editing software on the SSD and data on the TB second drive.  I have an IOMEGA external drive for backup.   Getting my little bookcase as a system stand to get it off the floor.  You have all been more than helpful.  Thank you - thank you.  I'm very impressed with the DS website, forums, systems, and mostly all of  you!  I'll keep you posted on my progress.  Should be ordering the system tomorrow after sleep and traditional Friday breakfast out.

Side note:  if I spend too much on breakfast, I'll back off to a single 680 and add int the additional one later...

Hi Lynn,

Sweet system, you are going to love the performance.

Smart move on getting it up off the floor. Will a book case be stable enough to set the computer on? It might be top heavy. You may have to secure the book case to your desk some way. I am sure you will work it out.

-- bookcase won't cut it.  If I don't find something sturdy around the house I'm thinking I'll hit home depot and see what they suggest.  Still haven't ordered -- stage fright -- and still trying to decide if I want RAID 1 on my SSD drive.  I'm such a wuss.  I'll run a config one more time and see where the $$ land.  I'll more than likely end up caught between RAID 1 (wussiness) and 2X680's (awesome eye candy)...I'll keep you posted.

Happy week-end!

Hi Lynn,

Dang, I thought we had you all fixed up. I know it is hard to spend that kind of money but you won't be sorry when you see the performance. There is no contest between RAID SSDs and Dual 680s. The 680s wins hands down.

Windows, programs and games can all be reloaded with a catastrophic failure of a SSD or HDD. The only thing you need to worry about are special projects data and a special save to another drive or usb drive will solve that.

Okay, I'm ready to order.  Going for the 2X680's, no raid -- quick question - which chassis model is the Cooler Master 942 HAF X?  What model do I start with to configure?  Confused For some reason I can't find it...

Ack.  I'm at shipping.  What's best, air or ground?  I will pay for the 3-day air if they are more careful and have it in their hands for less time.   I just can't do the $400 for the wooden crate .. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

You got me.   I never considered air.   Either way...you're in the hands of the Shipping Gods      Ground coast to coast is about 5 days.   All kidding aside ..most people have zero problems with shipping.        Good luck.

Hi Lynn,

Nice to see you down to the last thing. There are many of us on the East Coast that have shipped ground with no problems what so ever. No matter how you ship it there is always some element of danger like it being dropped or falling off of something. With shipping damage DS will take back the computer and make it good again. You don't pay any shipping fees. So even if it is damaged you are covered. I would just bite the bullet and go with ground shipping. DS uses a good packing system and only radical treatment is going to damage the system.

Congrats on your purchase.

Ordered!  I had to drop down to the 3820's, did go with RAID 1 (as luck would have it one of the disks in my husband's system failed yesterday.  No down time for him and he had a spare on hand so he was up and running with no data to retrieve.. and a tiny bit less eye candy for me (one 680 instead of two),   But it's an awesome system and I'm really excited.  Hurray for Digital Storm!  Excited

And shipping by ground!

Thanks again for everyone's help.  Couldn't have done it without you!
