In case anyone was interested the new GTX 980 actually outperforms the GTX Titan Black and costs less.

Here is a link to AnandTech comparing the 2.

Therefore, the 1st step on the Holy Warrior path,
Is to recognize thyself as thy 1st enemy.

The Titan is a lot more money because it wasn't designed as a gaming card, but a scientific modeling card. It's double point precision enables it to calculate with greater precision with longer decimal string which matters with millions of calculations per second. The higher 6gb vram wasn't to help with gaming on high res monitors but to handle the higher work load associated with the calculations.

When Nvidia saw people willing to spend so much more for a card called the Titan , they of course went with the flow. Money was good.

Not to say no one that bought it couldn't use it for gaming. It's higher vram was nice for some compared to the gtx 780/ 780ti with 3gb vram. If money wasn't an issue, then the best is the best at any cost.
