Topic: Graphic Card Question Posted: 16 Feb 2015 at 11:45am |
Just pondering, is there really a great difference between 295x2 and dual 980's for 4k gaming? Not sure I am ready to go to the red side, but want to keep options open.
Thanks in advance guys! |

It really depends on what you're doing.
For gaming, different game engines are optimized for different GPU architectures. For instance, AMD is promoting its Mantle low-level API so developers can fine tune GPU resources at a lower level (this also requires more time & work for the developers to implement). So I'd suggest looking at the various benchmarks out there and see what their results are. If you're looking for a "poor man's" professional workstation card, AMD's solution will be better for you. You can enable 10-bit color with their consumer cards. Also, you get a much better double precision floating point operator through-put ratio. Downside of the R9 295X2 is that you need to play close attention to the power rails of you PSU. The card runs out-of-spec with the PCI-e power connectors. It will also consume over 150W more power than dual GTX 980's. |

Benches I've seen show them pretty equal even at 4k gaming. Some games do favor one over the other by a few fps.
I would get the sli 980 considering their close performance because two cards give you more flexibility over a dual gpu card. |

Thanks guys, not sure I want to take the 500.00 hit for 2 980's, since the performance is pretty close. I will be getting at least a 1000w psu, not too worried about the power consumption. It's a good thing to ponder =)

I hadn't considered the price difference. Good point.

The R9 295X2 does have some performance margin on some of the games with Mantle optimizations to them. AMD seems to scale better at the higher resolutions than NVIDIA does.
If you have GTX Titans in SLI, I don't think you'll see much of a performance improvement over what you have right now. If anything, I'd look at getting a third Titan, or wait until the AMD R9 300 series cards come out, which, rumors withstanding, should have considerable performance benefits, especially at higher resolutions. |
