I am curious as to how many people on here have used google drive and if they know of other people who use it? Do you think it will be around forever or will google possibly trash it if nobody uses it?

I use Google Drive a *bit.* My professor put some work up on Google Drives for us to do collaboratively, and it's good for that, I suppose. I don't use it much myself, though, and I wouldn't get too attached to it. Cloud-based systems and the like often have security risks and stuff ~_~

So do you think it would be better to just purchase Office 365 Home and just pay the yearly subscription?

If you can get a discount on it through a university or other institution, maybe, but if not...well, Microsoft products are *expensive.* I would go with Google Drive, in that case, but I would also make sure to look up what sorts of security options it has, so nobody can steal your stuff. ;o

Microsoft Office 365 is for up to 5 devices and you need a yearly subscription. If you only need it on one device I would get Microsoft Office 2013 Home and Student. It costs $30 more on the DS site but you don't need a yearly subscription. Heck I am still using Microsoft office 2003.

You can look at Office 365 Personal (6.99/mo or 69.99/year) Same subscription service as above only "for 1 PC or Mac, and 1 tablet like a Windows tablet or iPad®, plus easy access on smartphones"

I'm pretty much just wanting it to use the Excel spreadsheet for my bfs work so he can track all his employees hours each day as that might be easier than using WordPad which is why i was asking about the google drive

For that purpose, I'd see no reason to buy Office, I'd just use the Google "Sheets" program.

Yea i think that would be wise, at least if something happened to this computer i at least would be able to access from my google drive because it would do me no good to buy Office just for the computer to go down and that would be a waste of money

I would say Google Drive and One Drive might even be more popular today in terms of free cloud storage than dropbox is. I sadly, and oddly enough use all three. It's just too good and secure of a backup solution to not use, especially given it's free price tag.

I use Google Drive. I don't think Google will deprecate the product, it is part of their Google Docs product line and they make money on that.
I put an addition layer of encryption on the documents I want to keep private. Anything financial in nature. That said, I am also very careful about computer security. For this I am using CipherShed, which is a fork of the audited TrueCrypt (now defunct). Unfortunately, CipherShed is currently available as source code (what programs are built from). This makes it hard for someone who isn't knowledgeable to use. For now, there are many commercial products that can do the job. If you use a non-Microsoft security product for your anti-virus/firewall needs the vendor probably has a product that will provide this sort of functionality.
