Does anyone know of a program out (I have Vista 64Bit) that will allow you to turn up the fan speed on the 4870? GPU-Z show's it at 24% fan speed and its at 78 degrees..higher than I would like it to be.

Rivatuner has not been updated for Vista yet =(

I read a few forums that talk about adjusting the .xml file but all of those seem to be for XP, havn't found one for my OS yet....

Make a profile in catalyst after turning on Overdrive and make sure clock and memory settings are correct.

For Vista

Then go to the following location and open the following file for editing "C:\Users\Your Windows ID\AppData\Local\ATI\ACE\Your CCC Profile.XML. The xml file will have the same name as the Catalyst Profile you saved. right click and hit edit.

For XP

Then go to the following location and open the following file for editing "C:\Documents and Settings\Your Windows ID\Local Settings\Application Data\ATI\ACE\Your CCC Profile.XML. The xml file will have the same name as the Catalyst Profile you saved. right click and hit edit.

Now go down the page until you see the following lines in the XML file ...

<Feature name="FanSpeedAlgorithm_0">
<Property name="FanSpeedAlgorithm" value="Automatic" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="FanSpeedRPMTarget_0">
<Property name="Want" value="0" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="FanSpeedPercentTarget_0">
<Property name="Want" value="23" />

Change the "Property name="FanSpeedAlgorithm" value=" from "Automatic" to "Manual"

Then change "Property name="Want" value=" from "23" to your desired fan speed.

Save the file then reload the Profile you just edited in the CCC. Good luck! Thumbs%20Up

P.S. I don't have Vista but I forget where I found this data... Embarrassed

Sweet it works! Soon as I adjusted from 23% to 45% and saved I heard it instantly turn the fan speed up. Before I could barely hear it but now I hear it. No biggy though, cause its running alot cooler now.

It went from 23% which was showing almost 80 degrees....bumped it up to 45% fan and now its a cool 40 degrees! Thats sweet!

I can't thank-you enough Widdlecat!!

How's that 4850 treating you? I almost got two of those in Crossfire but decided to go with just a single 4870 for now and will add another down the road..

I'm really loving my hd4850. It has great color saturation and a nice vividness. When I game I pop it to 690MHz / 1128MHz OC and have had no problems. It peaks at 80* C with the fan set at 45%. The fan is a bit loud (to me), but I like it running cooler. The gpu can run to 125* C safely according to ATI, but I don't wanna get yelled at for melting my vidcard down... LOL! LOL
If I had more money, and could convince the mom that it was worth it, I would have gone with a 4870. I guess we'll see how it holds up to new games that come out, but I suspect my ram and cpu will be the bottlenecks first.

Hi, I have followed the steps here, but there is no file called appdata or no .XML file of the profile I created.

Im using vista x64 and running 2x 4870's in X fire.

If you could point me in the right direction, id be grateful. 80 C is just too high for the card.

Have to ask someone with Vista the exact way to find the file you need. I'm only certain of the route to take for XP. 80* C is actually not too high for this card. ATI has stated that it is far below the max safe operating temperature of 125* C. The damage point of the gpu is at 145* C according to ATI.

Aye, your right. It stays at 80 C all the time, even when under load. My old 2900 XT used to get up to 100C. Heated the entire room xd

Thanks for the reply

Widdlecat, thank you for this walk through. I just used this to bump up the fan speed on my 4870 and it worked like a charm!

hello, I ve noticed your post about that subject (ati 4870 fan speed). I have the same problem. The temperature is around 79C and higher when playing games. The current catalyst supports the fan speed setup but at a constant speed. Is there a tool that can control the fan speed according the gpu temerature? best regards.
