Topic: Thermal Paste on CPU Posted: 08 Aug 2012 at 5:59pm |
Hey everyone, so I recently installed the h80 onto my cpu and when I took off scythe cooler that came with the system I noticed that thermal paste was on the green part(I think its called the pcb back plate) of my 2600k. I tried to remove it but after many attempts some of it still remained. The system is working fine right now but I just want to be sure that this won't cause me any problems in the future.

Its a good practice to install new thermal paste each time you install a new cpu cooler

The h80 came with pre-applied thermal paste but that isn't the issue. When I removed the old cpu cooler and removed the thermal paste there was some on the green part that wouldn't come off. So I just want to know if this is going to cause me any problems.

I believe the green is the mini-board the cpu itself is mounted to to align the pins to the mobo socket. As long as the shiny, metal surface of cpu itself is clean then no problem. The coolers fit to the metal surface with the stamped specs on it.
Run HWMonitor with pc under stress to check cpu core temps.

Based on personal experience with situations like this, I believe you will be totally fine. But I'd initially keep an eye on temps as bprat22 suggested just to be sure.

When I tried to remove it I used rubbing alcohol and some qtips but everything seems to be ok right now. I have an overclocked i7 2600k @4.5ghz @1.344v and under prime 95 blend test highest I reach is 67 under core 3 and around 65 on the other cores. While gaming max is 55 on core 3. I think these temps are reasonable. Before I overclocked to 4.5ghz I was running the OC that came with the system @ 3.9ghz and max was in the high 40's in prime 95.

You cleaned it right and those temps are very good.
You're good to go. Congrats.
