It's official. NVIDIA just announced the GTX 690 at their launch event in Shanghai. Not sure when it's going to be available for purchase or for what price. It's based on the GK104 Kepler chip, just like the 680.
I'm interested in seeing if it's going to be worth the price. Based on the 570/580/590 comparisons that point to the 570 being the biggest bang for the buck I'm betting we'll see something similar here whenever the GTX 670 is released. They claim to have better cooling technology in a water vapor cooler radiator, whatever that is. They also claim "whisper quiet" operation, but that sounds like vague marketing hype to me. Anxiously awaiting the benchmarks. |

I couldn't find a source for this, but the rumor is the GTX 690 will be available in limited quantities starting May 3, 2012, with wider availability by
May 7, 2012 from NVIDIA’s add-in card partners, including ASUS, EVGA, Gainward,
Galaxy, Gigabyte, Inno3D, MSI, Palit and Zotac. Expected pricing is
$999.

it will be interesting once we get some benchmark numbers to see how it compares to sli 680, i would consider the 690 but i feel that i will want a water cooled version to obtain higher overclocks, we will have to wait and see

One problem with the gtx690 is gonna be the same problem we had with the gtx590. If the card dies, you'll have to replace the whole card for big bucks, like replacing two cards in sli. If a 680 in sli dies you only have to replace a single card for about half the price.
Just a thought.

@bprat22, that's very true. But if you buy one and it doesn't fail then it's a moot point. I wish someone would publish failure rates of cards. I would much rather have the information available to go from "what if it fails" to "there is a X% chance of failure". While you have a valid point, I think it would carry less weight in the buy/not buy decision than say frame rate vs. cost vs. heat. With the 590 vs. 580/570 argument, the cost vs. performance comparison IMO favored the 570's, so I got three of them for my rig. I'm driving three Dell U2412M's in 3600 X 1920. That gives me about 40-45 fps in BF3 with ultra settings. I actually turned down my settings to get about 60-70 fps and I hardly notice the difference in image quality, but I'm looking to upgrade in the future so I can go back to ultra.
Here's a preliminary review on the GTX 690. What intrigues me is the claim of less power draw and cooler temps than the 590. The twin GK104 chips clock speeds are slowed about 10% (presumably for power consumption), but otherwise are identical to the chips used in the 680.
NVidia claims that scaling will be better due to the PCI 3.0 implimentation when you OC it. They're actually saying you can get better performance with a single 690 than with a sli 680 setup. Raw specs are fun to bat around, but the proof is always in the benchmarks. We won't see those for about another week.

Thanks for the feedback. I did read that earlier. If they can control temps, another big issue with the 590 then it would be alot better. The old 590 had to have clocks turned down to control them. Of course, the 680 is alot better in temps and so we'll see. It did say 300 w TDP vs 375. A step in the right direction.
Being an old service guy, I always look for things to break and kinda plan for it

While I still want to see some independent benchmarks, I gotta admit to wiping a small amount of drool off the corner of my mouth.

Alex, or anyone for the matter, do you know how long until you guys will be putting them into your computers? I just registered while looking for my next computer purchase which is going to be very soon. I'm glad I read the news before I purchased one. So, if you could inform me as to when you guys will be selling them along with your PCs that would be great.
Thanks. |

So the 690 is considered one card though right? So in theory, could be used on the ODE V2 level 4 build with the current MOBO. That MOBO can not do SLI, but it could do a 690?

Hi josephlee...Yep, the gtx 690 should work on a non-sli mobo. The 800W psu I think would handle it as long as the psu has two 8 pin connectors. Not sure on that psu.

@josephlee
Yes you can. I actually called DS tech in regards to this before for the 590. But of course, you'd have to make sure the PSU has enough power for it. But then again, for the price of a 690, one might be able to get a new Mobo, a PSU and another GPU for SLI. Edit* bprat got to it faster Edited by criTalon - 30 Apr 2012 at 9:40am |

Thanks everyone. Kind of what I thought, but never like to assume
As for timing, what I've seen is "limited release" on May 3rd and a broader release on May 7th. |

From a PSU standpoint...since the 800W was sufficient to support 570 SLI, and the 680's use less power, I would imagine it could handle the 690. All in theory

As expected the new 690 is more of the same. They still have cooling problems using a single fan and detuned cards. We will have to wait for a comprehensive review but it looks like the same basic mechanical design as the 590. It will probably have the same performance limits due to the dual cards on a single frame. Of course I am sure the reviewers will call it the most powerful single card available. It will be a surprise if we see it compared to SLI 680s.

I haven't seen anything yet that talks of cooling problems on the new card. I'd be interested in reading that if you have a link.
Given that the new card uses (if your mobo has the capability, of course) the PCI 3.0 interface, I'd think the issue of the single slot for two GPU's being a bottleneck is less of a problem now. At least that's the theory.
Anandtech has promised a review by Thursday. I'm sure Tom's will have one up around the same time. Without the numbers it's hard to make a call on this one.
Another thought. If you watercool the card, all the temperature problems go away. Edited by BF3Addict - 01 May 2012 at 12:35pm |

And the benchmarks are in folks. You can read them here and here.
It looks like most, if not all, of nVidia's claims for this card are backed up by the benchmarks. The GTX 690, compared to a GTX 680 sli setup runs a bit cooler, a bit quieter, uses less power and runs just a tad bit slower (i.e. not perfect scaling). This is an impressive card that will handle a 3600 X 1920 or 5760 X 1200 resolution with very good performance by itself.
Now the real question. Would I buy one (or two) of these for my rig? No, I would not.
Why, if it's such an impressive card, would I not run out and get it? Basically for all the reasons that have been discussed on these boards ad nausium. The GTX 690 uses an axial fan between the two GPS's that pushes hot air both out of and into the case (@FrankW, I understand this is what you meant by heat problems). Run a quad-SLI setup and you have the equivalent of two GTX 680's dumping their heat inside the case. Makes for a hard time trying to OC your CPU with all that extra heat to deal with. Of course, if you watercool the GPU none of the above applies.
Failure rates of cards also have a place in this discussion, but as I've mentioned before I don't think it should carry the same weight in the equation as other issues.
Personally, I'm going to wait for the 4GB GTX 680's to be released. I'll probably start with two and maybe add a third later if I can't get the performance I want.
I suppose if you have a generous budget and are going to WC the GPU, then it might make sense to get the GTX 690. For today's games and the raw graphics power they require to run maxed settings, it only makes sense if you're running big resolutions. Of course, if you really have a generous budget you might as well get a pair of these bad boys. Talk about future proofing!

Here is another review to add to the list: http://www.overclockersclub.com/reviews/nvidia_gtx_690/
And yes as BF3Addict stated the heat is expelled into the case. As far as performance goes. It depends on the game you play. 2 680s in SLI out performed 1 690 in some games and in other games the 690 was better. I think if you really want the GTX 690 I would recommend Liquid cooling for the CPU and the 690. That being said these are reference boards from Nvida using a central axial fan. It will be interesting to see what manufactures such as ASUS and EVGA come out with in addition to the reference settup. |

Any chance that you guys will be getting the GTX 690 into the ODE V2 Level 4? That was the computer I was looking at but sad to see the new card didn't make it in.
