I just got my new DS system and am having trouble picking a monitor to show off its capabilities (Radeon 5970, i7 920 OC@ 3.766 MHz, 6 G Corsair Dominator RAM). I tried buying the Dell U2711 monitor that has such rave reviews but Dell doesnt have any. What do you guys think about buying an apple iMac 27" for about the same price as a 30" monitor and using the mini displayport from the 5970 to the iMac's mini display port in target display mode? Or just find another great stand alone 27" or 30" monitor? I'm trying to stay away from Dell due to my horrible experience with my last attempt at buying from them. Thoughts? Advice? Recommendations? Thanks

Personally I would not do the imac thing as you would be just rigging something from the get go but thats just my own taste.

I was trying to stay away from Dell's as I tried to buy a U2711 from them but they dont have any and basically lied to me about it over the last three weeks with a horrible customer service interaction. I really dont want them to be the only way out of this....

Apple is going to be releasing a new 27" 2560x1440 some time in June, it should be in the same price range as the dell 27".  Would have to put off buying for a few months though.

I suppose I could get a cheaper monitor for now and wait for the new one to come out...

how much are you willing to spend on a monitor? If you're willing to spend quite a bit for a real quality monitor take a look at these:

the quality is amazing. Apple will rip you off and charge you a ludicrous amount of money and it's not even worth it. apple is all flash with no functionality.
The animal asks what, but the human asks why. And the god answers in silence.
